I feel that Emily was a prisoner of everyone else's expectations of her; her father put her upon a pedestal above everyone else and when he died she was left alone on that pedestal, as the center of everyone's criticism, an outcast in her community shrouded in the veil of a superficial prestige and wealth that really wasn't there anymore. ... This story really made me reconsider my definition of respect and how it can be a bad thing as well as good....
