Holder Jr. was born in New York City, where he did not experience the privilege of attending private schools, he studied and worked hard in public school and received a Regents Scholarship from Stuyvesant High School. He continued to work hard after he was admitted to Columbia Law School, where he majored in American History and graduated in 1973. He immediately went into law school at Columbia Law and clerked for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the Department of Justice's Criminal Division.
