Throughout the book the author shows how Grant manages to change Jefferson but at a slow pace. Grant says "We looked at each other, and I could see in those big reddened eyes that he was not going to scream. ... In a Lesson before Dying, Gaines also uses characterization to show that a man is strong when he is alone. ... A person cannot better a situation if they do not even know how to begin to fix it. In the novel Of Mice and Men the author uses conflict to show how certain situations turn a man into strong one and ends up being alone. ...
