James tells Chicken Man, "Nobody knows how smart I really am," (150) in an attempt to express that he will succeed regardless of bad behavior but Chicken Man blatantly retorts that " nobody"ll give a damn," (150) and insists that if James continues to flunk out of school James will end up sitting on the same corner. Later Chicken Man's words sink in, and James notes that Chicken Man is right, the failed men he encounters are just as smart as him; it is their choices that doom them. ...
