Oedipus wants to save his people once again and swears to find the murderer and states, "by avenging Laius, I defend myself" (167) He also shows a compassionate side at the end of the play when he walks in to Jocasta's room only to find her hanged. ... He was constantly arguing with Jocasta about being the murderer of Laius, and when it finally came out that it was true and Jocasta had committed suicide, he finally realizes how stubborn he has been. ... When Oedipus breaks down and cries because he finds Jocasta hanged, it also puts pity into the audience. ...
