Riis only wanted to call attention to the horrendous conditions a large portion of the population of New York City lived in. I felt this book was very difficult to read and the message Riis was giving his readers was unimaginable. ... Hard working immigrants lived in filthy, dangerous, cramped areas because there was no other place to live. ... If it weren't for flash-photography Riis would have never been able to capture people in their so-called "homes." ... The walls were deteriorating and the room seemed smaller than my room at home; that one room was their entire home. ...
