To tie all my learning skills and habits together, I would say that taking notes is very effective. If an instructor is in front of the class giving a lecture and showing a powerpoint, with text, pictures, etc, and I'm taking notes, writing down exactly what I'm seeing and hearing, it helps me understand the material being taught more efficiently.
