The Equality of Same-Sex Marriage

This millennial generation has many different values and opinions than previous generations, including that on same-sex marriage. The right for marriage equality is a fight that has been brought to the public because of this generation's growing voice. They stand together to be heard; same-sex marriage should be legal! Marriage is traditionally viewed as the legal union of a man and woman as husband and wife. But if they were two men or two women? Heterosexual couples argue that homosexual couples to marry will destroy the sanctity of marriage. America's LGBT citizens contribute to this prosperity, serve in the military and are essential part of the fabric of this nation. Everyone, and their children, deserve the stability and freedom that comes with marriage. Doesn't matter where they live. Today, same-sex couples' children live in uncertainty because their parents are frowned upon in society. That marriage isn't recognized as if it were a job or military assignment, no same co

The US Open Market for Transplant Organs

Abstract This research paper explores the applicability of an open market for human organs in the U.S. It gives information about the current situation of organ transplants, examines the controversy around experts of the subject and provides a middle ground solution to efficiently cope with the problem of organ shortage. A few decades ago, the idea of a market for human organs would have been unthinkable. Now, it is not only imaginable but also pressing because of recent medical advances and the outgrowing number of people waiting for organ transplants to save their lives. Throughout this paper, the appropriateness, the benefit, the morality and the unpleasant effects of such market will be discussed. Open Market for Transplant Organs in the United States One of the most critical issues in health care is the shortage of organs needed for transplantation. In the U.S, the sale of transplant organs is prohibited by the National Organ Transplant Act of 1984 (NATO), meaning that an organ

History of Empirical Religions

"Religion is any specific system of belief about deity, often involving rituals, a code of ethics, a philosophy of life, and a worldview" (1215.org). It appears all around the world. There is not one society that is free of religion. Religion is a prime factor for civilization today and the past. It made different civilizations across the world great, but it also made civilizations crumble. Two religions, Buddhism and Christianity, triumphed in a civilization where the religion was uncommon. Buddhism came from India which then spread to China by the Silk Road. Christianity, however, spread throughout the Roman empire by apostles, such as St. Paul. Buddhism and Christianity also solved and caused some major problems in ancient civilizations. Both, Buddhism and Christianity, were essential to ancient civilizations whether or not it helped civilizations or ended civilizations. Buddhism is the belief, traditions, spiritual practices, and teachings of Buddha. Around 500 B.C.E.,

Power and Helping Transaction Paper

Abstract In this paper, an analyzation of Pinderhughes' chapters six and nine will be thoroughly discussed. Pinderhughes discusses power and its effect on societal values. Along with several examples on powerlessness situations that social workers- to be might confront someday, I was able to understand his overall concept and compare it to my own. Adding some personal experiences of my own, I will be able to compare and contrast Pinderhughes suggestions on power and help in the social work field. Also, the NASW Code of Ethics and NASW Cultural Competence will also be discussed as well as ways that Pinderhughes suggest will help aid cross-cultural problems. Furthermore, PinderHughes tactics will be applied to one out of three journals. Power and Helping Relations In the helping profession, power plays a meticulous role and if not addressed correctly can ultimately effect the well-being of a client. In Pinderhughes article, he states the various definitions of what power may mean to

The Heart of the Dog - Creating the New Soviet Man

The ideologies of pure communism called for a new man and woman that would be developed with certain "dominant" qualities. These qualities are the basis for the idea of the "New Soviet Man" created by Lenin and Stalin in the socialist revolution. The Soviet man should be selfless, literate, and enthusiastic about spreading the socialist revolution and working towards the betterment of society. Stalin hoped to achieve this by destroying any class of people that strayed from his ideas and beliefs. He had no doubts that humans originated from apes and believed our consciousness in its most basic form was no more extensive than the consciousness of a beast. By destroying (or killing off) those classes, he would be able to build a classless society with complete equality. There would be no private property, ethnicities, or anything to differentiate one citizen from another. Bulgakov expresses his criticism of these ideas in his novel "The Heart of a Dog." He sh

My Visit to Croatia

The warm breeze coming from the ocean and a raspberry iced tea in my right hand; that is the life I was living for a week straight. The sun beating down on my body makes me wonder if I should have applied more sunscreen. A different country to me means getting away from the life I am used to. This country was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. It entered my heart and a I will never forget it. Croatia is the most intriguing place I have ever been to because of its beautiful sights, delicious foods, and lively activities. Crossing the border and going through a tunnel underneath mountains was sunless and intimidating. I wondered if on the other side of these mountains was the beach that I expected. I could see the light at the end of the tunnel as cliche as that sounds. The beach was this shade of blue that you could not take your eyes off of. Walking to the beach on a small trail, I noticed the shore was not made of sand granules, but little tiny rocks. I think that

Education: The Pathway to Freedom

Many people face hard times searching for their place in the world. This search is made more difficult for those people without a solid foundation to stand on. People lacking a safe home, loving family and stable support network are forced to work harder than those born into less impoverished conditions. The plight of these underprivileged people is intensified further by the scarcity of positive choices to improve oneself when born into slavery without basic rights or when orphaned and abandoned by their parents. These people, stripped of their freedom, are forced to fight hard to overcome their circumstances or spiral downwards into misery and desolation. In The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass and Jimmy Santiago Baca's A Place to Stand, both authors discuss the significance of education in overcoming obstacles and enabling a pathway to freedom. Douglass grew up in disadvantaged environments that deprived him of a strong sense of identity. Douglass was born into slavery an

Uncle Tom's Cabin: The Creation of Cassy

It has been said that we become who we are as people by the things that happen to us and around us as we age. There are things that occur that we will always remember and, whether we realize it or not, affect the decisions we make from that moment on. It can happen at any point in time and can be seemingly meaningless or it can be extremely substantial, like touching something hot as a child or witnessing something horrific as an adult, these things change us. Many people find role models that they strive to be like, while it can be just as likely to come across someone who makes mistakes that we learn from. No matter how it happens, we are merely an outcome of experiences we have lived through in the past that will shape our future. In Uncle Tom's Cabin or, Life Among the Lowly, we are shown that people are made the way they are by the environment they exist in, the people they are surrounded by and the decisions they have made in the past, using Cassy as an example. Cassy is the

A Call for Renewable Energy Sources

Oil, gas, coal and nuclear fuels are all sources of non-renewable energy. These sources are used in everyday life to produce the energy that powers our machines and anything else that requires fuel consumption for our personal use. Even though the energy being produced is made to power the society we live in, the way it is being created is very harmful to the environment and needs to be altered into a more clean process before great damage is caused. The solution to this problem involves more all-around use of renewable resources to power the world. The country needs to look into new sources of renewable energy to prevent damage of the environment and its inhabitants. The term non-renewable refers to elements that will run out or not be able to replenish itself in our lifetime or many lifetimes after. Fossil fuels are the number one main source for non-renewable energy that is extracted today. The process of turning these fuels into useable energy begins by them being put into a combustion chamber to raise steam that will move the turbines of the power plant which switches on their generator

Growing Up with Diabetes

The most difficult challenge I have ever faced is growing up with diabetes. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was only thirteen months old, so growing up dealing diabetes is all I have ever known. This is difficult for me because I cannot eat what or how I want, I have to plan my schedule around it, and I cannot really do anything in extreme conditions. Above all the challenges I have faced while dealing with diabetes, the most challenging is not being able to eat what or how I want. As a young child growing up, I would see everyone around me eating and enjoying foods that I knew that I could not or should not eat; it made me feel a little left out. My parents did their best to make sure that I had all of the sugar free foods, drinks, and snacks that were available. The aspartame (sugar substitute) used in sugar free foods has a different taste than regular sugar. This is why I believe that regular food tastes better. The holidays are definitely the most difficult times that seem to be the hardest for me to do right, because th

Is College Tuition Really Too High? by Adam Davidson

Adam Davidson is an award-winning publisher and co-founder of a radio show. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Chicago and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in economics. Adam Davidson starts his article by stating some very chilling facts about how the economy has chances since the late 20th century. Davidson mentions that public college tuition has risen nearly four times, towering over any other raising prices in the economy. He claims that "pricing dynamics ripple throughout the rest of our economy," (par. 4) determining

Governments of One State and Oceania

In 1948, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a document that expressed that all people deserve life, liberty and the freedom of thought. It is the responsibility of the government to protect these rights since the individual entrusts themselves to the ruling body. But in Yevgeny Zamyatin's We and George Orwell's 1984, the governments of One State and Oceania deny their citizens these basic rights, resulting in totalitarian societies. Since governments are often ranked upon how they uphold basic human rights, it is possible to determine which of these institutions has betrayed their citizens' natural rights more, based upon the UN Document. Both governments consider their citizens expendable - public executions and secret abductions rob people of their right to life. In the government of One State, those who displease the Benefactor are sentenced to death by vaporization. After being placed into the Machine of the Benefactor, the doomed starts "melting

Love in To His Coy Mistress

Should one give up their long-preserved virginity just because eventually we will all die? Based on the remarks of the speaker in "To His Coy Mistress," this mentality is correct. Written by Andrew Marvell, this "carpe diem" poem displays the idea that one should make the most of the present time despite how it might affect the future. "To His Coy Mistress" presents a man striving to convince his lover to act on her passion before it is too late. By reading the title of this poem, one could immediately infer that this man's partner is quite shy about making love. While reading the poem, I could not help but question if he is truly in love with her, why is he pressuring her to have sex with him? The poem begins with the man conveying how he would compliment every part of her if they had an endless amount of time but quickly transitions into a cruel reality in the second stanza. In "To His Coy Mistress" Andrew Marvell uses figurative language such

Power Balance Bracelets: Thirty Dollars Down the Drain

Power Balance bracelets have been around for just over five years and ever since they came out they have been surrounded by controversy. The bracelets claim to increase your ability to balance along with prolonging your stamina. Both claims are completely false and are not supported by any actual science. Despite having no real affect on your athletic ability hundreds of thousands of athletes purchased and wore these bracelets in the hopes their abilities would be heightened. A large reason the Power Balance company has been so successful is due to the amount of celebrity athletes that wear and endorse their product. For example, Dustin Pedroia of the Boston Red Sox has been wearing balance bracelets since 2012. Younger baseball players who admire Dustin Pedroia see that he wears the bracelets and see that he is incredibly gifted on the field and they go out and purchase a bracelet also. Dustin is a four time all star and one of the best players to step foot on a baseball infield as

Balthasar's Diary: Romeo and Juliet

Balthasar's Diary Act I Today will be a bad day. I carry bad news that I wish I didn't know. I will spill the dreaded news to Romeo. I fear how he will react. I do not want to be the man to tear out Romeo's heart. It is the last thing he needs after this horrible series of events. The news I bring to thee is carried on my back and will soon burst from my mouth, spreading like a virus. As I walked into that church and saw her there, my world was brought down. Juliet lay like an angel. She and Romeo were such a great couple. Although the hatred of both families is strong, it was drowned and flooded by the flow of their love. What new events will unravel from this tragedy? What if Romeo refuses to believe me? I feel like a nasty bug, a poisonous insect that deserves to be walked on. The guilt that I feel is overwhelming, but I have no choice. I so wish to run away and hide or erase memory. Balthasar's Diary Act II Today I am curious as to where poor Romeo is. We suspected that he

Income Inequality in the United States

While the housing market for high scale apartments and luxury homes continues to grow, millions of Americans are living in housing they cannot afford. According to a study by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, 75% of the low-income population is spending over half of their income on rent or utilities (5). This percentage is much higher than the 30% percent experts suggest utilizing to ascertain financial stability (9). The primary cause of this problem is the lack of affordable housing for the lower class. Statistics show that the national ratio of affordable units to low-income families in the United States is a slightly more than 3:10 ratio (8). This lack of affordable housing in urban areas is primarily responsible for one culprit, land use restrictions. According to Professor Daniel Shaog, 'land use restrictions in high-income locales have created barriers to entry for less-skilled workers, exacerbating inequality and threatening labor mobility-a key component of a he

My Philosophy of Teaching

Growing up, I really hated school. I was one of those students who had to do what they're told but was never passionate about anything in school. I always went because I had to, not because I enjoyed it. I wanted to enjoy it; I never could. I remember my teachers sending emails or calling my parents because they didn't see a lot of motivation in my part. Therefore, my parents talked to me and helped me with homework, but still, the motivating factor was not there. I always wanted to like school more, because I knew that those kids who did, were doing way better than me academically. Even though I never had the motivation, I never completely gave up in school. I knew that I wanted to become a professional when I grew up and go to a university; I wanted to become someone in this country. It was not until high school that I finally realized that I wanted to become an elementary education teacher. I went to one of the best high schools in Illinois and the United States: Adlai E. Victimization and Sexual Harrassment

The experience of victimization is something that too many women are familiar with. Women and crime historically can be linked back to gender inequalities and the lack of attention they received in the criminal justice system. From classical theories of crime that fail to explain female offending behaviors to the negative treatment women have received by the correctional systems, the conditions of women's live have gone unnoticed. Although the participation of women in the system is growing and changing every day, the inequality is still present today. Sexual harassment, above all, is a manifestation of power relations and by analyzing why it happens, where it happens and policy implications put forth, one can make an understanding why it is a common problem and how we as society can make a change. While sexual harassment is not a new phenomenon, the legal actions towards it began 40 years ago during the 1970s when the U.S supreme court held that "sexual harassment is a form of
