The Relevance of the Letter from Birmingham JailThere are still many relevant cases of injustice towards African Americans in the present day. Black citizens still experience racial profiling, racial discourse, and abuse by law enforcement officers; these are three of the most prominent reasons that Martin Luther king Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham Jail" is still relevant today. They outline the issues he wanted to fight against – issues that many American citizens deny the existence of today. The life of a Negro was very hard in Birmingham because little to no one was on their side of the argument to desegregate. Most of the time, the locals were very hostile toward the Negros. They assumed if one Negro was aggressive and uncivilized, they all were. They feared social and political change because they were used to the segregated way of life. White southerners often profiled Negros as being unclean and unintelligent, simply because of the color of their skin. If Negros were submissive and infantile, the whites were strong and dignified. There was no freedom for Negros; if they wanted freedom, they sho |

NFL - The World is WatchingEvery fanatic has his or her favorite team. The team they cheer for win or lose, and the colors that run with their blood, sweat and tears. They look forward to the seasons not just for the weather, but also for their favorite pastime football, baseball, or soccer. Over 90 percent of Americans watch sports, that means that 90 percent of them look up to and respect athletes. Ranging from adults to little kids, someone somewhere wants to be just like their favorite player. Every move made by a professional athlete is watched; however, when an athlete does something that is illegal the repercussions are not as extreme as the ones for non-athletes. At a young age, most children have a dream of becoming a professional athlete, whether it is to become a football or baseball player, the dreams are still the same. If asked who their hero is many will say their mom, or their dad, but many will also name their favorite player. Nevertheless, what happens when a player is dropped from the team fo |

Truly Great by Stephen Spender"I think continually of those who were truly great" is a poem written by the author Stephen Spender. This poem is written in free verse with three stanzas having eight, seven, and eight lines in each. The time period for this poem was in the 1930's during war; which influenced Spender to write about the soldiers who were in the war. However, this poem is not strictly about the soldiers, but also about people who believe in themselves and fight for what they believe in. The use of "I" lets the reader know that the speaker is the author and the actual voice of the poem. The opening line of this poem helps the reader understand that the speaker is addressing the great; the verb "were" tells the reader that the speaker is reminiscing about the dead. Spender uses a vivid source of spiritual and natural imagery throughout his poem to convey these messages to the reader. In the first stanza, Spender starts his first line with the title of the poem. |

Marriage - Finding the OneAlmost fifty percent of all marriages in the United States will end in divorce or separation. Today it is crucial to pick a partner carefully and find someone you love that loves you just as much in return. It should not be to the point of infatuation, but someone that you will be able to make a life-long partner. There are a few qualities I believe make a strong bond between couples. I believe having a partner that is mature makes a difference, the person needs to be honest and live with integrity, and also be respectful and sensitive. The idea of someone being mature is not merely a matter of acting like an adult. It is not about a boyfriend that remembers to take out the trash or a girlfriend that never runs late. It is truly about making an active effort to recognize and resolve negative influences like the nagging ex-boyfriend that won't accept the split up. When a person matures emotionally, they are less likely to re-enact negative past dynamics in their current relationships. They |

How to Bake the Perfect Layer CakeMany people think that baking a cake is easy as buying a box of mix. True, this will produce a cake - if you can call a crumbly, messy disaster a real cake. But this is a far cry from the truly perfect layer cake. From scratch is the way to go. Ingredients make a huge difference. Technique is an incredibly important factor, too. Perfection is possible. Ingredients Make sure all the ingredients are fresh then you are well on your way to heavenly deliciousness! Choose cake flour to increase the lightness of a cake or a whole wheat flour to increase the density of a cake. The kind of sugar you use is important too. When you begin frosting the cake, it can be fun to add sprinkles or other decorations. You'll also need eggs and baking powder. And you'll need butter and some good-sized pans to bake the cake in. Butter will grease the pans so the cake slides out, and the fat in the butter will meld with the sugar to make a cake that almost melts in your mouth. White sugar will make for a ve |

My Writing and Literature StoryMy passion for storytelling and literature began at a young age. Childhood experiences and influences are what helped shape my outlook on writing and creativity today. Throughout school, I've always had a love-hate relationship with writing. I loved being able to dump all my ideas on paper and create stories with complex plotlines. But I disliked, and I still do struggle with, the intricacies of developing a coherent piece of literature. Even though writing is often difficult, the sense of accomplishment from completing a piece is very rewarding. Once I was taught to read, it was as if I had unlocked the gates to a new world filled with any adventure I could imagine. Some of my earliest memories are of my godmother reading to me in the evening. One of the first books to spark my interest was Charlotte's Web; I read it front to back at least five times. Up to that point, I had enjoyed reading for recreation; it wasn't until second grade that I became interested in writing. A few weeks |

Earth in Hesiod's TheogonyIn Hesiod's Theogony, Gaia is anthropomorphised and depicted as the mother to the first generation of gods and humans as well as being the physical dwelling place for them both. Earth is at first portrayed as a weak mother figure but she devises a clever plan to liberate her children, which develop her into a stronger character. Hesiod portrays Earth as weak, unable to be defend her children as a mother would, as she is "strained and stretched" (Hesiod, Theogony, 157) allowing Ouranos to hide their children within her. Hesiod makes it seem as though Ouranos's "wickedness" (Hesiod, Theogony, 159) was too much for Earth to oppose alone, as she did nothing to try and liberate her entrapped children. Unable to defeat Ouranos alone "she thought of a clever" (Hesiod, Theogony, 161) plan involving one of her sons. She "addressed her sons" (Hesiod, Theogony, 162) and "urging them" (Hesiod, Theogony, 162) to help her, tries to convince them to help her stop Ouranos and his "wicked crime." (Hesiod, Theogony, 1165) When Kronos replies, Hesiod describes Earth as "his well-loved mother" (Hesiod, Theo |

The Impact of Divorce on ChildrenWhen most people think of families they think of a mother, a father, and two kids. This is the norm for most families in the United States. However, some families are single parent families. This means that the child grows up in families with either only a mother or a father. However not all families will stay like this. Some families can end and lead to divorce. "Of all the changes in family life during the 20th century, perhaps the most dramatic--and the most far-reaching in its implications--was the increase in the rate of divorce"(Amato). Divorce can have a major impact on the child. These impacts can be life changing and these changes can even affect their life in adulthood. Many new challenges will come in to play. The majority of them can affect the child in a negative way if it is not handled with correctly. New changes will impact the child life. The child might feel that the divorce is their fault. Trust can be affected greatly and denial in the child can be seen al |

Good Reputations and the Road to SuccessThere are a lot of people in this world with bad reputations and with good reputations. People are more likely to hang around people with good reputations. I know a lot of people that I associate myself with that have good reputations. The thing about reputations is it takes so much time and effort to build one, but only one minute to completely destroy the reputation that you have built. For example, I have my best friend and my mother. When I was in the first grade I had met Trisha Mathison who has been my best friend for almost 12 years. She was in the 3rd grade when I met her. Everything about her is smart, beautiful, and bright. Trisha's life if filled with good people and is loved by many. She gives off very respectable and honest vibes, and that's why I keep her close to me. Being around someone like her I will eventually reflect them and also be known to have a great reputation. A lot of people take pride if they have |

Esperanza in The House on Mango StreetIn 1984, Sandra Cisneros published a collection of forty four vignettes titled The House on Mango Street. This Bildungsroman narrates the experiences of growing up in a Hispanic-American neighborhood in Chicago through the eyes of Esperanza Cordero, a fictionalized adolescent girl who is transitioning between childhood and adulthood. Due to parallels between the lives of Cisneros and Esperanza, Esperanza functions as a surrogate for Cisneros. Cisneros suppresses the milieu she witnesses as a child; therefore, when searching for her literary identity, she uses phantasies to channel those experiences onto Esperanza Cordero. Through sublimation, Cisneros fulfills her desire to free herself from the limitations of traditional gender roles, which allows her to give a voice to all the women who cannot speak up for themselves. Despite being a fictionalized character, Esperanza's life greatly resembles Cisneros' upbringing. In the first vignette, "The House on Mango Street," Espera |

MLK and Birmingham JailMartin Luther King, Jr. wrote "Letter from Birmingham" as a response to eight clergymen who criticized his and the SCLC's nonviolent direct action against segregation in Birmingham. He at first addressed the issue of being called an "outsider" by defending his right to be there in a straightforward tone that SCLC is based in Atlanta but operates throughout the South. One of its affiliates had invited the organization to Birmingham, which is why they came. He then further noted "I am in Birmingham because injustice is here" [1]. He discussed that his movement wasn't an irrational decision by explaining the events of postponement after postponement. Dr. King understands that clergymen prefer negotiation over protests but he insists negotiations cannot happen without protest, which creates a "crisis" and "tension" that force |

Image of Augustus in the View of WritersESSAY QUESTION 2: How accurate is the picture of Augustus as presented in his writings and those of other writers? Augustus was acknowledged as the most powerful man in the Roman world after defeating the alliance of Marcus Anthony and the queen of Egypt. Later, he was given the title as the first emperor of Rome. To the Romans, August was more than a mere ruler; he was the Roman's only hope for prosperity. (Jones & Sidwell, 1997, p. 49). Augustus claimed that entire Roman citizens called him "pater patriae", the father of the country (Augustus Achievements ex. 35). However, not all historians would agree with Augustus' picture of himself since there were many depictions of him, either praising or reprimanding him. In this essay, I will elaborate on the accuracy of Augustus' picture presented in the sources by comparing the evidence, which not all biased. Firstly, there is debate among historians respecting on Augustus' picture that gives us information about how he acq |

My Granddad: My Surrogate FatherMany people say that growing up without a father in the home is very hard. I am 18 years old, and I beg to differ when people use this phrase. I've never felt like I had to fill that father figure void in my heart. My father passed away when I was three years old, and I don't remember much about him. With my grandad standing roughly around 6'3, dark skin-tone, with salt and pepper hair, broad shoulders and toned legs. Many people say he favors the actor Idris Elba, which has gotten him a little big-headed. He is always wearing his favorite polos and khaki pants, with his Gucci cologne scent following behind him. With Grandpa John, stepping up to the plate, I felt like he was my dad in numerous ways. He was always there, whatever I needed he was there, through thick and thin. Grandpa John is the most important person in my life because he's charismatic, taught me how to be a good listener, and is always the go-to guy. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." The Hoarding CompulsionCompulsive hoarding also known as just hoarding is the inability to get rid of large amounts of clutter or trash disregarding the amount of value the items have to the point where it can cause unhealthy living conditions, serious injury or death. A person who has been diagnosed with hoarding often become angry or stressed when it is time to part with their items. People who are related to hoarders sometimes have no idea that their loved one is suffering from this disease. Hoarders are good at hiding their mess from the outside. I chose to discuss hoarding because it is a serious condition that some people do not think is real. Most would say "just throw it away," but it is not that simple. I would like to explain the disorder and go into more details about it. According to the DSM-5and Abnormal Psychology third edition book, it states six specific criteria that must be met to be able to be diagnosed with hoarding disorder. The first one is, "persistent difficulty regarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value" (p 136). That basically means that, the individual always have had issues wit |

Pharmacy Technician - Observation and InterviewI am looking to become a pharmacy technician, so I interviewed a current pharmacy tech, Mary, who has been in the field for five years now and Andy the Pharmacist who has been in the field for over 20 years. I observed Pharmacy in Pittsburgh. The pharmacy has been my family's go-to pharmacy for many years. My mom and the pharmacist, Andy, are close friends so I was able to set up an interview with no issues. When I walked into the pharmacy I noticed how large the place was. Although, it didn't have a drive thru. It's a huge room that's separated from the OTC drugs and prescription drugs by a short wall where the pharmacy techs and pharmacists stand behind with a counter. The pharmacy is brightly lit with lights all over the ceilings. The pharmacy looked very clean and organized. At this pharmacy there is a ratio of 2 technicians working with 1 pharmacist. The way the pharmacies stock is organized behind the counter is alphabetical order by generic name. Observing the stock locatio |

Overview of Filming a CommercialOn the set, people are running everywhere trying to get the stage set up. Actors are pacing back and forth practicing their lines. People are setting up refreshments for everyone to have between takes. Working in a commercial can be hard at times, and it can also be time consuming. They are waking up early in the morning to get the stage set up and staying late to finish filming the scenes for that day. All the work is supposed to result in a commercial that will entertain the public. Kent Arceneaux, cinematographer, photographer, and a neighbor of mine, asked me one day if I wanted to help him with a few commercials. The commercials we shot were in our own backyard! One commercial was for Town & Country Meats back in 2013. The commercial has four guys hanging around a table outside with a grill and some charcoal. The first guy says that he brought the wood chips. The second guy says he has the seasoning. The firs |

Values in The Merchant of VeniceWilliam Shakespeare's, The Merchant of Venice, is an abiding play in terms of the values and ideas. The applicable values and ideas of gender equality and religious discrimination that are displayed during the play, represent how the present society can relate to them and still remain heavily debated topics. The injustice that Shylock receives, demonstrates the impact the value of religion can have to the behavior of a character. This advances the relevancy of the play as religion is still influential in today's society. Additionally, through Shakespeare's characterisation of Portia, the values, and ideas of gender equality are represented in the play, which are compatible with the modern society. Foremost, the religious discrimination directed at Shylock, reflects the significance the value of religion has, which continues to be source of controversy now. The current society can relate to this, as the prejudice Shylock encounters, corresponds to the discrimination Muslim's face today |

America: An Obese SocietyObese Society It's time to focus on the health problems that occur in this country. Crime and drug trafficking are not the only problems in our society, according to the National Institutions of Health, "Obesity is the second cause of death in the United States, causing approximately 300,000 deaths every year, what basically means that 1 in 5 American deaths is associated with overweight". Nowadays, anyone has chances of developing this disease; there is no distinction between social classes and ages. The data from National Center for Health Statistics mentions that "obesity is not limited to adults, but has also affected young people as well" showing that in the United States "18 percent of children aged 6-11 years and 21 percent of teens age 12-19 years are considered obese" and "a third of adults 20 years of age and older-over 100 million people- are obese". Imprisonment has thus been seen as the ways to deter crime, protect the good of the public and for rehabilitation. The United States is the largest country with over 2 million of its citizens in prisons. New York City has seen progress in decreasing its overall incarceration rate and population rate in correctional facilities. Incarceration rate for men is 14 times higher than the incarceration rate. Recently in 2013 according to the Sentencing Project, the rate of incarceration for Black men has dropped since 2000. For black men, the rate decreased by 9.8%.In 2000 they were incarcerated at 7.7 times the rate of white men, but that gap shrunk to 6.4 times the rate for white men. While the rate decreased for Black men that is not the case for white men. Incarceration rates for White men rose by 8.5% over the sa |
