Impulsive Decisions in A&P

The short story, "A&P," by John Updike, shows that when an impulsive decision is made, not everything turns out as expected. Sammy, the main character, meets three flawless girls who are terribly attractive; however, his boss does not believe that the girls are appropriately dressed. Because he has an opposite view, Sammy takes the courage to defend the girls in a heroic way. Sammy realizes that his actions are not as important as he believes. Initially, the setting, takes place in a small city at an A&P store. Right away the reader can imagine a store full of people; however, in the story is the opposite. Sammy, a nineteen- year-old, is working at an A&P store empty of customers. The main character says, "The store's pretty empty, it being Thursday afternoon, so there was nothing much to do except lean on the register and wait for the girls to show up again." Since there was nothing to do, Sammy decides to watch over the girls. Sammy enjoys observing the girls unlike Lengel who says, "Girls, this isn't the b

Literature and the Process of Discovery

The process of discovery entails a journey that can induce a metamorphosis in an individual through new experiences, which can be evoked by curiosity or wonder. Discoveries of both the known and unknown may be confronting and provocative, but what remains common is that that they are ultimately fresh and intensely meaningful. These all however lead to an acquisition of new perspectives that shape how an individual perceives the world they live in. These aspects are present in William Shakespeare's, " The Tempest", and Lord Alfred Tennyson's, "Ulysses". The Tempest demonstrates the notion, of how a fresh and intensely meaningful discovery can result in the transformation of an individual and lead to new values and perceptions. This is highlighted through the transformation that Prospero undertakes, from revenge towards reconciliation. Initially Prospero is confronted by the arrival of his treacherous brother Antonio and is initially desirous of revenge. He is entr

Balance of Payments and the Australian Dollar

The individual components of the balance of payments together play a pivotal role on the value of the Australian dollar. The balance of payments can be defined as a record of the transactions of the transactions Australia with the rest of the world. It allows economists to study whether Australia's external position is sustainable and whether there are too many outflows in relation to inflows. In turn, changes in the components of the balance of payments have a significant impact on the Australian economy and in particular the value of the Australia dollar as they indicate Australia's transactions with overseas nations. The balance of payments can be divided into the current account and the capital and financial account. The current account consists of non-reversal transactions including the net primary income section, which mainly records returns on investment, the balance on G+S, which is the difference between aus exports and imports and the net secondary account, a minor section

Technology and Penetration Testing

Introduction Also referred as pen testing, penetration is the process of testing web application, network and PC framework so as to find out the vulnerabilities that an attacker could take advantage of. Pen tests can be automated using software applications or they can be physically performed. The procedure consists of collecting the objective information before the observation test, identifying the possible points, endeavoring to soften up ((for all purposes and intent or seriously) and accounting back to the findings. The main target of the penetration testing is to come up with the shortcomings of the security. Pen testing can also be used to test the consistency of security approach of an association, the security awareness representatives and the ability of the association to react and distinguish the security episodes. Not only does the pen test reveal the vulnerabilities, it also checks strides to efficiently misuse the vulnerabilities with a particular end objective to exhibit

Civil and Uncivil Disobedience

When there is an issue that people want to change, they go protesting in their own way by disobeying either civilly or uncivilly. When going through civil disobedience, you disobey the law of where you live. Examples of civil disobedience can be not paying taxes, boycotting, and picketing. Uncivil disobedience is when you go the violent way to protest such as violating the rules or breaking the laws. I think that civil disobedience is effective when people demonstrate that the protesters are creating a positive change; not crating harm. However, when civil disobedience is triggered by violence inflicted on the protesters, civil disobedience does not work; protesters can then use uncivil disobedience. Civil disobedience is important because it bring wider attention to the public so that it can make changes to the law. They risk punishment, imprisonment, or even violent

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

"You don't know what goes on in anyone's life but your own. And when you mess with one part of a person's life, you're not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can't be that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person's life, you're messing with their entire life. Everything affects everything." In this particular quote, Hannah explained how a person's words can affect an individual's life as a whole. It's like playing dominoes. One misstep could lead to a bigger reaction that you wouldn't see coming. Same in reality every little action you make could affect someone's life without you even realizing it. All of us have a story and we do not have any right to judge a person because we do not know what that person is going through. We can see the person smiling but deep inside she's already crying. We think that she's fine but we don't know what's going on in her mind. Sometimes, we just have to be sensitive with their feelings because we can be a b

The Color Purple and Indian Horse

"People find meaning and redemption in the most unusual human connections," states novelist Khaled Hosseini. Oppression, where one is prolonged to cruel or unjust treatment or control, can be defeated as a result of connecting with family and friends. In comparison, the novels "Indian Horse," by Richard Wagamese and "The Color Purple," by Alice Walker, display how the protagonists overcome obstacles of abuse through the connection between them and their loved ones. It is apparent that despite their different experiences of abuse, both Celie and Saul go through the same process of transformation; from oppression to liberation. The abuse creates serious physical, emotional and psychological effects on the two. However, they overcome the trauma from their abuse when they connect with their families and friends, and as a result become independent and free people. The abuse Celie receives results in physical, emotional and psychological effects. With Celie's mother out of the pic

Studying Human Growth and Development

There are a lot of reasons to study human growth and developmental psychology. Human growth and developmental psychology can you help you understand others as well as yourself. If you are planning on having children or a career with the kids, this is the class to take because it helps you understand the children better and you can have a better interaction with them. As human beings, we go through a lot of stages in our life via development. Developmental psychologists study human growth and development throughout a lifespan. They study the physical, personality, emotional, cognitive, perceptual, and intellectual growth. There are lots of researches done to help understand how and why human beings change and grow, the information can be useful to help human-beings reach their highest potential. In this course, I want to learn about domestic violence. My burning question is 'why women in abused relationships do not leave said relationship but rather stay'? I started asking questi

AP Environmental Science - Course Reflection

In AP Environmental Science, we studied the earth and the impacts humans have had on it. We analyzed environmental problems and their causes and we looked at potential solutions to those problems. While there were many important ideas and concepts covered there are three main issues that have changed my view of the world and my place in it: (1) Humans have altered the earth's natural systems and are doing it at an increasing rate, (2) Environmental problems can impact our culture and our economy and (3) the survival of our future generations depends upon our developing better behaviors and new technologies that will sustain rather than destroy the earth's natural systems. Human beings have had an impact on the environment for millions of years. There are many examples that illustrate our destructive behaviors. Deforestation is a major problem. Trees are needed to absorb carbon dioxide in the atmosphere but we are cutting them down at a time when we are putting more carbon dioxid

Colgate-Palmolive: The Golden Standard

As the world continues to become more connected through technology, the spreading of ideas travels across the world in seconds. One idea that's been around for centuries is the worldwide abolition of slavery. In the United States, it is commonly considered an old problem. However, in many countries, it remains a very significant issue. When filling out the survey to determine the number of slaves I use in my daily life, I was surprised to find that my lifestyle involves the use of 35 slaves! After I finished the survey, I brushed my teeth and pondered on the thought that my toothpaste may have been manufactured by slaves. Although my Colgate-Palmolive brand toothpaste was made in America, I still wondered if there was slavery used in the company for other brands under their name. To my surprise, Colgate-Palmolive Inc. is o

Paper Towns - A Hero's Journey

My hero for this story is the one and only from the Paper Towns movie, Quentin Jacobsen. Quentin, or "Q" as his friends call him, is the protagonist/narrator of the story. Q has been in love with his neighbor Margo Roth Spiegelman since they were kids but they grew apart as they went through high school and separated into different social groups. Q is an odd and nerdy guy who hangs out with band geeks and tends to overthink things. One day, Margo asks him for a favor and since he idolizes her he says yes in a heartbeat. Things seemed to be going well but Q realized that Margo went missing the next morning and he just ended up heartbroken. Since he feels as if he is the only person who truly cares about her well-being, he becomes occupied by thoughts of decoding secrets she has left behind about her whereabouts. He proves himself to be a caring friend by showing great determination as he searches for a girl who he has only spoken to a few times in years. The first part of my hero's journey

Going to a Cyber High School

Going to a cyber high school full-time can have some benefits but, they are all in perspective. The differences in social interaction, in class distractions, and academics should all be put into perspective. One person may think that a cyber school is better because they just simply can not concentrate in class with all of the other people distracting them. Where as, another student may find that the social interaction helps them and they can get a better understanding of the coarse material. While attending a cyber school there is an obvious benefit of waking up and not having to get dressed and go to school. Some students may even leave the room while the teacher is talking and he may never know that the student is not paying attention. So, is it truly

Justice and Injustice in To Kill a Mockingbird

Martin Luther King, Jr, a famous civil rights activist, once said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." In "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, justice is definitely not served. In the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama in the early twentieth century, whites discriminated the blacks in the worst way possible. Atticus Finch, a well-known and respected lawyer and gentlemen, raised his two children, Jem and Scout Finch, in the little, quiet town of Maycomb. In the era of the novel, the community automatically had a mindset of negativity and injustice towards poverty stricken people, like the Cunninghams, people of different race, such as Tom Robinson, and citizens of mental status, like Boo Radley. In the 1930s, people of low income were looked down upon; in the novel, there are many examples of poor families who were treated unjustly. In this specific instance the Cunninghams, a poor, yet honest family living on a farm, were crudely pointed out and discriminated against just for being poor. To bring this to

International Communication Skills - Cycling Project

This report discusses the changes I made in my concept for the cycling project, based on the cultural dimensions of Mexico. Mexico scores very high on power distance, collectivism, short term normative orientation, the uncertainty avoidance index and the synchronic idea of time. Apart from these cultural dimensions I also thought about the use of color. In short, my concept is a bicycle rental system for young adults who can rent six-person bicycles to transport themselves while clubbing. First of all, because my concept is based on young Dutch people, I chose to use a very informal type of communication. This is accepted in the Netherlands, because the power distance over here is very low. In Mexico, on the other hand, the power distance is very high. This is why an informal use of language will not be appreciated. When it comes to the type of communication I use, I should also take

Literary Trends of the Restoration Period (18th Century)

Introduction The restoration of King Charles II to the English throne marked the beginning of the restoration period. It was called the restoration period, because it is during the same period that monarchy was restored in England. From the historical timeline, the restoration period began in 1660 and extended into 1700s. One of the major developments that followed the restoration of King Charles II was the repudiation of the puritan standards and way of life. Initially, the puritans controlled the literary work and defined moral and social standards of the people (Naeem, 2010). After the restoration of King Charles II, all the puritan regulations were abolished creating a rather free environment particularly for the authors of the time. Most writers began to imitate the French writers, throwing away the patriotism, love of adventure creative vigor and moral discipline aspects defined by the old Elizabethan and puritan spirit. Despite having deviated from dominant styles developed b

The European Conquest and Rise to Power

Europe was one of the weakest forces in the world after the fall of the Roman Empire. Despite this setback, Europe came to be the one to conquer the new world and turned Europe's situation around. After the fall of the Roman Empire, barbarians invaded due to a power vacuum. This created a culture revolved around fighting leading them to develop new technologies to gain an advantage while in battle. Europe was the one to conquer the world because its warlike culture led them to develop technologies that allowed them to conquer. The main reason why the Roman Empire fell was because the traditional Roman culture started to break down. Before, the Roman Empire was one of the strongest forces in the world. No one dared face them. However, little factors started to add up which ultimately resulted in the fall of the Roman Empire. Rome adopted a new religion: Christianity. This was drastically different from their previous belief of polytheism. This sudden change weakened the power

Human Trafficking: Problems, Causes, and Solutions

The United States passed the 13th amendment in 1865, effectively abolishing slavery in all forms. The constitution states, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude... shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." One would think that in this day and age, slavery would be completely eliminated. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery that affects over 20 million people worldwide. It generates multiple billions of dollars for criminal enterprises and is the fastest growing business of organized crime. This form of modern-day slavery is prevalent in our country today, and shows no signs of slowing down. The term "trafficking" is defined in three separate parts which depend on the type of work and the means of obtaining or maintaining that work. First, there must be a process in which people are either recruited, harbored, moved, or obtained. This must be done through a means of force, fraud,

Pierre Trudeau's Domestic Influence in Canada

Pierre Elliot Trudeau, leader of the Liberal Party, the 15th prime minister of Canada, professor and one of the most well-known Canadian politicians ever. Pierre had one of the more exciting lifestyles of our many prime ministers. Dating high profile women and driving fancy cars making him half Canadian celebrity half Canadian politician. His popularity to the public began a great phenomenon because "he did what no politician before or since has done: he touched the dreams of an entire generation of Canadians." Trudeau inspired millions of Canadians, being of French-Scottish background he was able to touch the entire population. Pierre often had very polarized opinions on things, either being strongly for or strongly against issues, this lead to controversy at times. Trudeau also played a very major role in uniting Canada as a country. Pierre Trudeau was born on October 18th, 1919 in the wealthy suburb of Outremont in Montreal. His mother was both French and Scottish, so Pierre g

Willy Loman - Death of a Salesman

In Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman," Willy Loman struggles to find success and be the role model that his sons look up to him as. Although he works every day and tries hard to provide for his family, Willy ultimately fails at being the perfect father. He feels trapped himself and feels like he trapped his own family, leading to his suicide at the end of the novel. Within Jonathan Witt's "Song of the Unsung Antihero: How Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman Flatters Us", he expresses that Willy is over exaggerated and should not be considered by the audience as an anti-hero. Although well thought out, Witt's claim about the over exaggeration of Willy neglects to see his true position as the failed hero of the story and, in actuality, shows the opposite of what Miller intended to portray. Miller creates Willy to be a working man who, even with little job or pay, goes out every day and tries to succeed, disproving Witts point that Willy has no passion and fails to be the he

Themes of The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption, directed by Frank Darabont, is considered one of the best movies of all time as a result of the powerful hidden themes. The lead character, Andy Dufresne, is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and is sentenced to two consecutive life sentences at the fictional Shawshank Prison in the state of Maine. Unfortunately, he is innocent and should not have ended up there which relates to how life is not always fair and the corruption within today's society and the prison in this case. He does, however, manage to strive on and find hope and eventually escape from the prison 20 years prior to his conviction. This goes to show how perseverance and persistence are important qualities to keep a hold of in a place where they lack. Andy also managed kept his integrity which allowed him to be a trustworthy person who could help others and in turn earned him friendships from people among the prison. The idea of a prison is to turn criminals into better people while

Economic Growth and the Sustainability of Tourism

While working on the sustainability of tourism, it should also address the needs of visitors, the industry, and host communities. I agree that "The government and its planning authorities play the most important role in ensuring the sustainability of tourism." However, there are other various groups that are responsible for ensuring the sustainability of tourism. An important role of the public sector, which is the government and planning authorities, is to control the rate and scale of development in tourist areas, and to monitor tourism activities and development to secure a reliable source of information. This information can then be used to develop strategies and plans for sustainable tourism development. In order to achieve their role the government and the planning authorities have set quotas, by limiting the number of tourist arrivals. An example would be Bhutan. Bhutan's government has implemented "High Value, Low Volume" policy which has been successful ac

NFL and the NCAA - Performance Enhancing Drugs

The growth and use of performance enhancing drugs make them no longer a taboo subject among professional athletes and is starting to become in fact rampant among athletes. There appears to be no end in sight since leagues like the NFL and NCAA have weak testing programs. Traditional locker rooms in the NFL have a few steroid users and have many HGH abusers due to the NFL's ineffective testing programs. HGH has become a serious issue for the NFL because HGH allows the average NFL player to gain an edge on the competition with no risk of getting caught. Steroids in sports is an epidemic among players trying to gain an edge, which leads to increased usage of steroids. The use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs are unacceptable. However, with testing by the NFL and the NCAA which is sporadic at best, it allows players to get away with repeated use and abuse of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. Both leagues have had many players use steroids and many more are ge

The Problem of Teenage Depression

Teenage depression is frequently illustrated as an invisible illness that has symptoms that easily mask one's negative emotions. It makes adolescence incredibly emotional and causes behavioral extremes. The severity of depression in a high school teenager can vary from person to person. Each individual can take a different approach to curing himself or herself, either by seeking help or not doing anything at all. Depression, as defined by the publishing company Merriam-Webster, is a serious medical condition in which a person feels very sad, hopeless, unimportant, and often unable to live in a normal way. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one out of every four teenagers undergoes depression. A majority of high schools aren't intended to diagnose and manage emotions or mental illness, but high school teenage depression is widespread. There are many factors why teenagers become diagnosed with depression. Certain individuals have an obvious reason behind their depress

The Progression of Advertising

Throughout the years, our view of ads has drastically changed. As many people in this generation only care so little about ads, it challenges advertisers to be more creative, and even be smarter than ever in creating their ads. Many of us, including me, sees advertising such as banner ads and pop-up ads to be annoying and how boring they are. In the advertising world, it is believed that if an ad doesn't catch your attention with in seconds, then they are considered failed. So, with this in mind, advertisers want to create meaningful ads that consumers actually can connect to and interact with. With the growing number of internet users around the world, the World Wide Web has become the most important advertising route for many advertisers. According to Interactive Advertising Bureau, the revenue of online Advertising has grown enormously, from U.S. $1.8 Billion to $20 billion in 2007. "The 10 fold increase not only

Mental Health Care Funding For Everyone

Over the years, access, quality, efficiency, and the support of the mental health care reform have been put into question. Mental health has traditionally languished near to the bottom of the international health agendas as well as nation's' health spending (Carey). The mental health care system in the United States is a multi-billion dollar company and still is not large enough to care for everyone who needs it. Mental illnesses are disorders of brain function. They have causes and results from complex interactions between a person's genes and their environment. Having a mental illness is not a choice or moral failing. Mental health has been put on the back burner for many years. It is now time to stand up and fight for better mental health care coverage for everyone. More funding needs to be provided for mental health care because greater numbers of people are not having access to appropriate care, those suffering from mental health issues are often forced through the judicial syste
