The Ones Who Walk Away from OmelasThe Utopian city of Omelas comes off as the ideal world to live in, even with the child who is constantly abused for the sake of the town's happiness. As simple as the story is portrayed, there is actually more to see than the average eye can pick up through the use of allegory. There is Symbolism being shown throughout the text, starting with the abused girl or boy in the basement that everyone gives their negative energy to. There are some clear metaphors throughout the text, such as the emerging social realities that exist as part of the American identity. The style and use of language is very important when it comes to portraying the mood and setting to all readers, and overall the theme of the whole story brings together all of these elements to explain what it all means. This story is filled with a variety of symbols. It is difficult to find which symbols to choose when it comes to which are more important to the developing story. At the beginning of the story, the people are c |

Lab Report - Calorie Content of FoodPurpose The primary purpose of this lab was to analyze the calorie content of various foods to test. Different food types had different amount of calories within them. This experiment allowed me to analyze the calorie content of food by constructing a basic calorimeter. The different food types that I measured were a form of nut, a marshmallow, and a food of my choice which was a potato chip. Results Data Table 1 (Hands on Lab, 2016) Peanut Marshmallow Potato Mass of the Beaker (g) 51.9 51.9 51.9 Mass of the Water and Beaker Only (g) 101.9 101.9 101.9 Mass of the Water Only (g) 50.0 50.0 50.0 Data Table 2 (Hands on Lab, 2016) Food Item Description Peanut Marshmallow Chex Cracker Mass of food, clamp, and cup – initial (g) 29.2 34.7 29.0 Mass of food, clamp, and c |

Water Depletion and DesalinationAlthough the earth is about 71% water, only a fraction of it is potable fresh water. Around .37% of water is actual drinkable fresh water, of which .28% is actually accessible to us. When that is boiled down, only .00001036% of water on the earth is usable to humans. Therefore, with over 7 billion people on the earth, it is no wonder that there are water problems on earth. Over one billion people do not have access to clean water and almost 2.5 billion do not have access to adequate sanitation. These problems are concentrated in third-world and non-western countries, such as many areas of Africa, parts of Asia, and the Middle East. It can be seen that these same areas with little usable water also have poor hygiene. This is evident on this map, where the darker shades of purple indicate poorer hygiene. The causes of lack of water are pollution of water due to industry, overfishing, pollution and waste being dumped into water, clim |

Criminal Cases and Plea BargainingIn America, we have experienced a great amount of trials ending in a plea bargain. The vast majority of criminal cases are resolved by plea bargains: 94 percent in state court cases, 97 percent in federal. For defendants, accepting a prosecutor's plea deal is less risky than going to trial and possibly being convicted on a more serious charge with a stiffer sentence. Plea bargaining can be seen as a "loophole" within our justice system, it gives the criminal an easier way to get out of the trial which would possibly land them with a heavier sentence. Defendants who are offered plea deals need effective counsel to ensure that their decisions are well-founded and voluntary, not coerced. Under the sixth amendment, the supreme court said in 2010, a plea is legitimate only if a defendant has had the assistance of counsel while considering it. You may be saying, "What even is plea bargaining?" Well, it is an arrangement between a prosecutor and a defendant whereby the de |

Slavery and the Civil WarSlavery was the catalyst for the Civil War because other issues like sectional tensions and arguments over political power were based on the expansion of slavery. The south relied on slavery while the north relied on industrialization. The National Government placed a tariff on imported goods in 1832 which angered South Carolina because they had to either pay taxes for their goods or trade with the north whom they disliked. The south did not want to pay the tariffs so they created the Ordinance of Nullification in 1832, and in response to that Andrew Jackson created the Force Bill in 1833 which favored the north and the south was heavily lacked votes. For example, when the House voted on the Force Bill the north had over 50 votes from two states while the south had approximately 40 in total from all slave states and the south |

Rewards and Talent Management in OrganizationsMultinational companies and industries pay more attention to talents that enable them to forge ahead in the rather competitive business scene. Talent management forms an integral part of corporate human resource managers' job and has gained significant traction from both human resource management experts and human development professionals. Arguably, it is prudent for human resource managers to develop talents rather than acquire them. Therefore, talent and talent management is a priority area that firms strive to explore in pursuit of competitiveness. The success of an organization depends on the ability of its human resource management department to attract and retain competent personnel in the organization. Potential employees would consider an organization to be |

Photosynthesis Lab NotesI. Introduction Plants capture free energy from the environment using a process called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis occurs when plants capture light energy from the sun and convert it into chemical energy, like glucose. The chemical formula for photosynthesis is 6CO2+6H2O+light---->C6H1206+6O2. This can also be written carbon dioxide+water+light energy----->sugar(glucose)+oxygen. Photosynthesis takes place in the plants chloroplast. And chloroplasts contain chlorophyll, a very important substance. Chloroplasts are usually portrayed as "a big fat sack of chlorophyll"(Crash Course, Photosynthesis), but they are not, they are very complex. They have thylakoids, they have stroma, which is where the Calvin Cycle happens, and they also have pigments that absorb the light. And these pigments are the base of photosynthesis. These pigments absorb light from the sun, and combine carbon dioxide and water to "convert it into energy for the plant"(UCSB Science Line). T |

Turning Points of the Cold WarThroughout history, many political, economic and social conditions have been developed causing a change in the course of history for nations and people. The Cold War was a major turning point in history. It was a time of tension between the Soviet Union and the United States. Both sides had very different policies. The United States' policy was "Containment" which consisted in the stop of communism and to keep it isolated. The Soviet Union policy was the total opposite, it was the spread and growth of communism, this policy was called "Expansion". The Cold War wasn't declared in the same sense as most wars, rather it progressed over time which led tension to increase between both nations. Many people say that the Cold War really began with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill's speech where he described an "Iron Curtain" which was an imaginary line that separated the |

Hacktivism as an Emerging Form of Political ParticipationThe exponential growth in technology throughout the world has led to tremendous leaps and bounds for all fields of life. Technology has changed the way we grow as a society, improving functionality in education, economics, politics, and security. However, this has also led to advances in ways to attack security and even created a new area of security attacks known as hacktivism. Hacktivism - "a new controversial form of civic participation" ¬- is a common action performed by the hacktivist group Anonymous. This group and the foundation of hacktivism is heavily covered by Galina Mikhaylova in her thesis, "The 'Anonymous' Movement: Hacktivism as an Emerging Form of Political Participation", written in 2014, as part of her partially fulfilling the requirements for a degree of Master of Arts with a Major in Sociology from Texas State University. The thesis as a whole was presented to a committee three esteemed professors of the university that was responsible |

The Use of Irony in PoetryBritish lexicographer, Henry Watson Fowler once said, "Any definition of irony - though hundreds might be given, and very few of them would be accepted - must include this: that the surface meaning and the underlying meaning of what is said are not the same". Irony can be quite a complex concept to explain clearly, as part of its purpose is to be unclear. Despite the complexity, irony, specifically in poetry, works as a way for a poet to convey deep emotions, symbolic meanings, and messages in a subliminal, indirect way. There are three forms of irony used in poetry for different effects: verbal, situational, and dramatic. Verbal irony is the gap between the literal and figurative meaning of words used, situational irony uses the contradictions of a readers' expectation versus the poem's reality, and dramatic irony contrasts the knowledge of the readers' versus the main character. Although irony can be a hard concept to grasp, three powerful poems will further distinguish an |

Two Worlds in The Great GatsbyIn Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby People are been divided into two different groups, the West Egg and the East Egg. The people from East Egg are descended from well know families, like the Dukes of Buccleuch. However, the people from East Egg are these who worked themselves from bottom to the top, and are more fashionable and careless. Although the two different groups of people are in the same social standard, their different backgrounds prevent them from them pursuing their dreams. The West Egg Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby explores the shift in the American Dream where only the super rich can accomplish their dreams. Tom and Daisy's wealth protects them from the consequences of their actions. Tom and Daisy are both from the upper crust of society, and are united by a background of money. After Daisy killed Myrtle, she is not being responsibility for her careless action. Instead, Gatsby takes the responsibility from her,and becomes the escape goat of t |

The Book of HoseaThe book of Hosea is one of great prophecy accounting for God's relentless love for His children. Hosea wrote it himself to the land and people of Israel (2). Hosea was called by God to be His voice to the people in about the middle of the eighth century b.c. and dedicated at least thirty-eight years of His life to prophesizing (3). Hosea is typically known for its metaphor between Gomer's unfaithful marriage with Hosea and Israel's unfaithful relationship with God. This book focuses on the themes of sin, judgment, and forgiving love (1). Hosea's purpose in writing this text was to demonstrate to the Northern Kingdom the spiritual adultery they were committing towards God. He came to inform them, however, that although God was not pleased with the way they were living their li |

The Road Less Taken by Robert Frost"The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost is often referred to as "The Road Less Traveled." This poem gives insight into the diverging paths in one's life that they must choose between. The fork in the road metaphorically symbolizes the freedom one possesses to make their own choices without any determinism of their ultimate fate. One's life is self-deceiving and inevitably determined through choice and chance with no separation between the two. The interpretation of this poem is often misconstrued due to the memorization of its lines that are never truly read. Frost's poem has become easily recognizable through its references in commercials, television shows, and other publicized items. However, when one refers to this poem, they often think of it as one where the individual standing in the woods makes a triumphant decision to differ from the crowd and take the "road less traveled." Our Consumer SocietyThe rise of the consumer culture is a phenomenon characterizing the 20th and 21st centuries, where the economy depends on the population's spending on goods and services. Before the Industrial Revolution – that is, before the 18th century in England, or the 19th century in Western Europe and North America – the majority of population lived in rural areas and worked in agriculture, where the resources for production were limited. Nowadays, societies of developed countries are organized around the unprecedented consumer appetite and display of commodities through which individuals gain their identity and prestige. Despite the obvious positive financial effect on the economy and corporations, where the economy develops by generated demand for goods and services, creating innovation, convenience and employment opportunities, consumer society is often a topic of debate and criticism. There is a psychological impact of consumerism that promotes destructiv |

Ethnic Groups in AdvertisingThe only way for consumers to know about a new product is through advertising. At first, advertising was just in print, in newspapers. Today, though, advertisements are seen everywhere throughout America. Advertisers have used every media possible in order to sell their products to consumers. Newspapers, magazines, television, and social media websites, have all become platforms for companies to advertise a product to the world. Companies gear these advertisements to appeal to certain groups of people, especially people of a certain ethnicity. "advertising is grabbing attention and then sharing some message with the person whose attention has been grabbed!" (). Advertisers also portray certain ethnicities negatively, creating stereotypes that are not true to certain groups of people in America. "Racial stereotypes are constructed beliefs that all members of the same race share given characteristics"(Jewel 1993). American advertising negatively affects different mi |

The American Enlightenmnet MovementWhile researching the American Enlightenment Movement, I found that although historians talk more about the French thinker's role in the revolution, it was actually four American rulers who left a mark in history. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Madison all used their knowledge to come up with ways to better America. When Napoleon Bonaparte, a ruler in France, stepped down from his position, people turned to the American views to escape the corruption in Europe. My goal in this paper is to show the connection between the American Enlightenment Movement and four major American leaders. The Age of Reason or the Age of Enlightenment began in the eighteenth century, although many historic events happened between 1715 and 1789. Thinkers in the United States and British North America adopted strong political and religious views that greatly influenced the American Revolution. The thought behind the Age of Reason was intelligent leaders could convince people to change the way they see things and adopt their ideas. Those leaders decided it was a reasonable way to create a better society. During this enlightenment |

The Short Happy Life of Francis MacomberThroughout history, there has been a class of men that truly epitomize the core of masculinity. These men are fighters, sportsmen, and hunters; Wilson is the latter. Wilson, from the story "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," is the essence of masculinity that Ernest Hemingway idolized. Hemingway was man's man; like Wilson he hunted big game, he drank heavily and he was a womanizer of sorts. He also fought in both world wars including the liberation of Paris and the storming of Normandy. Ernest Hemingway shows himself, or at least what he wants to be, in the form of Wilson. Wilson is not only a hunter, he is a very good hunter; he has a sense of sport and unshakable nerves. Wilson remains perfectly calm and aims carefully in order to hit his target whether it is a far off antelope or a pouncing lion, seconds from tearing him limb from limb. Wilson has crossed the threshold that we see later exemplified by Macomber. Wilson is fearless be |

Frederick Douglass and EducationLearning about history plays a significant role in shaping our country because it helps people refrain from repeating mistakes that were made in the past, and it teaches people that there are ways to improve life. Frederick Douglass was a slave that was born into slavery. In his Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, he reveals his experiences and how he escaped the despair of slavery with his education. While he was a slave, he taught himself how to read and write; therefore, education and knowledge became the key in his escape from slavery. Education is also the key in escaping from slavery in the twenty- first century America; however, there is a different form of slavery in this century. Many adults today are stuck in an economic slavery that holds back so many people. Like Douglass, they too can obtain freedom. Reading Douglass's narrative persuades adults that are suffering from economic slavery into realizing that they can also escape slavery with the he |

Small Steps and a PrayerMy mother and I led my grandmother as she slowly prepared herself to make the punishing trudge to our car. Out of her wheelchair, she made her first steps, her limbs already screaming for rest in just a matter of seconds. Under the ferocious hot sun, she inhaled deeply to acquire any oxygen she could get from the trees. She was clearly exhausted from the arduous walk, her legs shaking like the ones of a newborn trying to stand. Of course, I must have helped her, but my mother held me back, as once my grandmother has set her mind to do something, there was not a thing that could stop her. Who were we to hinder her from a task that would otherwise be so simple anyway? Of their own accord, my eyes took on the accustomed act of watching my grandmother's small steps. I took notes of her each movement, which was not at all new to me; I have observed, learned, and mimicked her movements and idiosyncrasies many times, her powerful loving persona never becoming monotonous to me. Contributing to Early Childhood EducationThroughout this course and my experiences as an Early Childhood Education professional, I have learned that to make a difference in this field one needs to be an advocate. This means being a voice for what you believe. According to Kadzielawski (2015), advocacy consists of being comfortable discussing the issues that are passionate to you with anybody who will pay attention. It is challenging to discuss the issues with people that don't want to listen. Whatever the issue is that makes you passionate, be sure that you share your passions to get others people involved. An early childhood education degree plays a big part in teacher efficiency, but teacher competency is not guaranteed to come with a degree. A factor that could be more serious in the ability of a teacher than a degree is the quality of the degree program. Quality of a higher education program consists of the preparedness of new teachers that includes educating them on the understanding of the development of a child and a |

The Cure at Troy by Seamus HeaneyThe tension between civilization and savagery lies at the heart of this play. Each character experiences the competing impulses that exist within all human beings: the instinct to live morally, act peacefully, follow the true and the good or the instinct to satisfy one's immediate desires, act violently and enforce one's will. Philoctetes, "the wild man", cut off from civilisation on Lemnos proves, paradoxically, to be, arguably, the most civilised: he is the recipient of the theophany, who alone sees the god and to whom the god's words are addressed. He is also the character who has the greatest appreciation of the gods that are the basis of civilised life. The conflict between civilisation and savagery is portrayed throughout the play by its setting, language and imagery. In the opening lines of the play, we are first introduced to the setting: Lemnos, a large island west of Troy. The scenery of this island reflects the theme of savagery. Sophocles expresses this savage |

Benjamin Franklin - BiographyBenjamin Franklin was a very significant figure during the American Revolution. His success as an inventor, scientist, printer, and politician made him a very famous and successful man during these times. His involvement in the drafting and signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States always is an important part in US history. Simply put, we could not be here if Benjamin Franklin didn't exist. Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston to father, Josiah Franklin and mother Abiah Folger. Josiah had seven children with his first wife, Anne child, and ten with his second wife, Abiah Folger. Benjamin was his 15th child and youngest son. Ben formally went to school at Boston Latin School and learned how to read, till 10 years old his father took him out to work fully in his candle and soap shop. At 12, he was sent to his Brother James' print shop to work there. James frequently beat and was harsh towards Ben. Ben published a pseudonym |

The Declaration of SentimentsThe authors parallel the Declaration of Independence due to its call for equality. The latter claims that all men are created equal and, therefore, should enjoy the same rights and freedoms. In this way, the authors of the Declaration of Sentiments argue that men and women are equal and have the same inalienable rights. The right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness are universal to human beings regardless of gender. These rights are drawn from the Declaration of Independence, and the government has to respect them and ensure that all citizens access them. In this way, Stanton an Mott feel that they have the right to denounce allegiance to the government due to its failure to protect equality. Further, they feel that the state has interfered wi |
