Speech - Women and Mental HealthHello Oprah and audience; thank you very much for having me today. I am here to provide you with some information about women's mental health in the US. Using a developmental framework, I will discuss with you three specific life cycles from a woman's life: childhood, adolescence and adulthood childbearing years; which will help you all have a better understanding of the complexity surrounding the female identity. In my talk I will be discussing psychological phenomena and disorders that are particularly prevalent among females as well as overview how sociocultural views and expectations have influenced and continue to influence today the mental health of women; affecting their overall physical and psychological well-being. It is important to learn about these issues so that we are able to find ways to lessen the psychological damage that is caused to women and find ways to improve their quality of life. First of all, may I ask how many of you grew up listening to stereotypes that pra |

Knowledge, Meaning, and PurposeOur personal lives are often dictated and affected by meaning and purpose gained through knowledge. In order to explore the role of knowledge in providing meaning and purpose in our personal lives, one must first define what 'meaning in our personal life' and 'purpose in our personal life' are. These definitions may differ vastly depending upon each individual's perception of life. For example, renowned American psychiatrist and author, David Viscott, once famously said, "The purpose of life is to discover your gift. The meaning of life is to give your gift away". His interpretation of the meaning and purpose of life focuses on devoting personal lives for the greater good of the society. On the contrary, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins believes "life has no higher purpose than to perpetuate the survival of DNA" . He remains purely scientific and believes that the only reason organisms exist is to give birth to future generations. In my opinion, m |

Connective Tissue Disorder - Marfan SyndromeAbstract Marfan syndrome is connective tissue disorder. It is caused by a mutation of FBN1 gene that is responsible for encoding Fibrillin-1 protein. The mutation causes the drop of the amount of Fibrillin-1 which consequently affects the connective tissue. Connective tissue loses its strength and support which leads to various defects in different parts of the body. Cardiovascular, skeletal and ocular systems are most often affected. However, further symptoms include tall and slender build, disproportionately long arms, legs, fingers and toes, a breastbone that protrudes outward or dips inward, a high, arched palate and crowded teeth, heart murmurs, extreme nearsightedness, an abnormally curved spine and flat feet (Mayo Clinic, n.d.). Beside these, patients may also experience symptoms like spontaneous pneumothorax, skin abnormalities and hernias. Therapy for Marfan syndrome includes combined meditational and surgical treatments coupled with ocular interventions. Key Words: Marfan S |

Schools, Students, and Social Media: Stay Out of Our Business!A major topic floating around is whether or not students should be punished at school for what they say and do on social media. Blogger Scott Armstrong commented on an online post which asked " Should students be punished for their schools for comments made on social media for their homes." on TED conversations in 2012 saying: [Social media posts are] playground gossip. Schools that react to it need to check themselves. For some reason, people think the written word carries more weight or importance than the spoken word. By reacting to gossip, schools give weight to it. I don't think social network sites are as substantial as people think. Granted, a lot of people use them, but that doesn't imply that the content being shared is worthy of any attention. (TED.com, 2012). This quote makes a valid point when saying students should not be punished in school for what happens on social media. This is because what students say online doesn't make a big impact on the school. When t |

Critical Analysis - Fatherhood and HappinessAccording to studies, the first few years of married couples are filled with happiness. Over the course of their lives, they start feeling less satisfied. They are most unhappy when their children are in diapers and adolescence. They only go back to their previous level of happiness when their children grow up and move away. People are happier when eating, shopping, watching television or exercising, than when interacting with their children. This is according to the study conducted by psychologists. In fact, housework chores make most people about as happy as an act of parenting. Economists have realized that children have a small negative impact on the overall happiness of individuals. In his essay, "Does Fatherhood Make You Happy," Daniel Gilbert (2009) tries to show that once a child is born, the Parents happiness dis |

The Failure of Spanish FloridaSpanish Florida was a colonial territory of Spain on the 16th through to the 18th century. However, in this whole period the Spanish government did not have full control over this territory [ CITATION Cha14 l 1033 ]. Economic, social, and military aspects of the colony were not in good shape over the period that the Spanish government was in power. In 1763, Spanish government gave up the territory to the British in exchange for the Havana. After two decades, she came back. However, she was unable to do away all the misfortunes that had befallen her in the first period. The United States eventually took possession of the region after a half a century of reign (Mathers, Mitchem, & Haecker, 2013.). This series of nonperformance by the Spanish government in the region, therefore, defines the failure referred to by the author of this article. According to the author, one of the major troubles that led to the inadequacy of the Spanish government was th |

The Curiosity of Scout - To Kill a MockingbirdA child will do anything to get what he/she wants. Just like Curious George did in the TV show, George was a monkey who always got in trouble for being curious, just like Scout. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout is a young girl who is just learning about everything. During this time of curiosity, segregation comes into her life and she learns throughout the book what it is. Harper Lee uses Scouts curiosity to present the idea that nosy people will go to the extreme to find the unexplained, or something that they want, just like a child would cry or complain about not getting what he/she wants. Throughout the book Scout is curious about many things and most of the time she was curious she would always find some way to get in trouble. One example of Scout getting in some trouble for being nosy is when she asked Walter Cunningham why he was pouring so much syrup. Lee states, "Walter poured syrup on his vegetables and meat with a generous hand'but he's gone and drowned his dinner in syrup"(Lee 32). Calpurnia had to grab Scout by her collar and take her back in the kitchen to straighten her out because she was curious as to w |

Moby Dick and the Demands of a Strong FaithThe goal of any religion is to develop the inner self, an idea which, prior to the Romantic Era, would have been considered selfish. Herman Melville helped materialize positive connotations of religious isolationism in the mid 1800's. In his epic novel Moby-Dick, the pages are woven with the theme of religious isolation. Captain Ahab is constantly isolated, whether of his own volition, locked up in his room aboard the Pequod, or because his faith isolates him from his family. As the truest believer, Father Mapple, no matter how popular of a whale man he is, isolates himself whenever he communicates with God, proving that the only way to communicate with God is through isolation. Queequeg's Ramadan is a prime example of how religion demands complete separation from the real world. The only way to be true to a religion is to isolate oneself from the community, which Starbuck fails to do, proving he is a weak character. Religion, and a strong faith in religion, demands isolation from any |

The Exploration of Anorexia in Regards to NyashaThe use of characters to symbolize more than just a person in a story is often seen throughout any given piece of literature. Authors use characters to portray problems that may be larger than they appear at first glance. These problems often appear as mental or physical symptoms that the character is facing. Tsitsi Dangarembga uses this tactic in her book, titled Nervous Conditions, to show the displacement of one's true self. This can be seen when analyzing Nyasha and Babamukuru. On the surface it may appear as though Nyasha is simply a character that is struggling with an eating disorder, but if further investigated, it is found that her anorexia is a direct result of western colonization. The colonization of Zimbabwe affects the way that Nyasha acts which in turn causes Babamukuru to act out towards her as he still believes in traditional Shona values. Having just moved back to Zimbabwe after five years of residing in England, Nyasha has developed a more western way of living and |

Film Overview - The HurricaneIntroduction I have recently viewed the film 'The Hurricane', directed by Norman Jewison and starring Denzel Washington as Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter. There is no doubt in the minds of many people who are familiar with the Rubin "Hurricane" Carter story that he, and the man who was convicted for murder with him, John Artis, are innocent of those crimes. While no one knows for sure who is guilty of the crime, but the one thing that is for certain is that Carter and Artis were victims of racial bias from many people who would see them in jail. As the movie progressed, I became aware of the many professional, social, and legal issues that took place in the film. (Worrall & Siegel, Essentials of Criminal Justice, 2013, Chapter 1) As an officer of the law there are ethics that must be followed. Justice personnel function in an environment where moral ambiguity is the norm. Police serve as the interface between the power of the state and the citizens it governs. Social Issues |

K To12 Curriculum and the Philippine Education CrisisThe K to 12 Curriculum has been implemented by the government for the enhancement of the Philippine Basic Education System. It aims for quality basic education for the Filipinos to become globally competitive and holistically developed. It gives substantial and sufficient benefits for individuals, families, society and economy. Although, k to 12 program is an initiative action for the betterment of the Philippine Education but still there are underlying questions about its effectiveness in terms of the implementation and sustainability. For the fact that the perennial education problems in the country had not been resolved and the condition of the Philippine Education was critical tom become ready for K to 12 curriculum. Technology Means a Simple LifeNowadays, technology all around humans' life, and become a part of daily life which cannot lose. Most people, such as teenagers, adults, and even some elderly, are using the technology. Many people repeatedly ask a question about whether the technology brings benefits or not. Some people think it make their life much easier; however, some people believe that technology only has the hard side. Personally thinking, technology makes people's life simpler than making people's lives more complicated because newly developed devices, improvement of living condition and efficient transportation. To start with, technology endow people with progressive electronic devices to create more usable applications, such as the relationship of smartphone and the apps on the phone. Most people would agree that "mobile devices are increasingly capable of handling information in a variety of ways" (Mobile Devices That Makes Your Life Easier). Especially, those electric appliances not only bring more fun to our lives but also provide more convenience. For example, in China, nowadays, an increasing number of people are using the application called Eleme, which is a food delive |

Discrimination in a Discriminatory NationTwo applicants apply for the same job, both with the same credentials. Same education, same experience, both have copious references, and neither have a criminal record. The only difference? One of them is white, while the other is a minority. In this situation, four for five times, the employer will choose the white applicant. Society has comes a long way from having segregated schools, bathrooms, and drinking fountains, but it isn't enough. Racial discrimination continues to predominate the public and the workplace and it is creating a toxic world. Through wage separation and poverty rates, it must be addressed that racial discrimination is very real in society, particularly in the workplace. Unemployment is a key factor in identifying inequalities between African Americans and whites. According to PubMed, African Americans are twice as likely to be unemployed, and minority wages lag well behind those of whites (PubMed). Also, from 2008 to 2009, only 13% of Americans lived in povert |

To Autumn by John Keats"To Autumn," by John Keats, is a beautiful descriptive poem written to capture the author's deep love for autumn. Keats begins by speaking of crops plumping up to their full, ripe potentials. He continues by describing creatures lounging in the changing colors by the brook's side, inhaling the sweet scents of budding poppies and other plants. The author concludes his poem by describing the songful cries of the creatures of the sky as they fly south to keep warm for the winter. Keats effectively uses imagery, denotation, and connotation to depict his passion for the autumn. Imagery is the representation through language of sensed experience. In the first stanza, Keats uses imagery through the sense of taste. Lines 6-8 speak of "fill[ing] all fruit with ripeness to the core, swell[ing] the gourd, and plump[ing] the hazel shells with a sweet kernel." These descriptions are to allow the reader to taste what Keats is tasting. In the second stanza, Keats uses imagery through smells and t |

Expectations of Domesticity - Women in the 19th CenturyThe women during the 19th century were held to higher standards over the men. Women were meant to follow the principles of the culture of domesticity (piety, purity, submissiveness, domesticity). Females were made out to be inferior to the male, but forced to exemplify better morals than them. These principles were centered for white middle- class women, but many slave women tried to follow these rules. Harriet Jacobs was a very religious women, from the teachings of her grandmother growing up. She struggled to uphold her religious principles against her foul-mouthed master, who obsessed over her and tried to make her his mistress. The principles of domesticity conflict with the conditions of the female slaves, the treatment of the mistresses, and the advantages and disadvantage of breaking these principles. For black men and women, slavery was an equally devastating experience. Both were torn from homeland and family. Men were physically abused while women were emotionally, ment |

Essay on the Twin ParadoxAccording to special relativity, time travel into the future is possible. In science fictions, we have time machines which allow us to go anywhere we want either into the past or the future. But in reality, as far as we know only time travel into the future is possible and it works like this. Imagine we have two identical twins, Peter and Paul. Peter gets into a rocket and travels to a star ten light years away. A light-year is the distance light travels in one year which is approximately 9.4607 × 10 12 km (Crockett, 2013). He moves at 80% the speed of light. When he gets to the star, he turns around and comes back at the same speed. Twenty-five years would have elapsed on earth but only fifteen years for the traveller. When he gets out from the spaceship, he is surprised to see that his identical twin is aged an extra ten years. Theoretically, if you can get your rocket going near the speed of light and you went as far as one of the galaxies and came back, millions of years would ha |

Mistreatment of Migrant Farm Workers in AmericaIn the North-Central Mexican city of Juarez, times are often pretty rough. Crime is decreasing as of 2016, but the percentage of violent crimes in Mexico is still higher than almost all major cities in the country to the north, the United States. In fact, poverty is extremely prevalent with "494,000 Juarez residents living in poverty or extreme poverty" (Isaad). As Virginia Isaad points out "a new study from the UNICEF says that 5 out of 10 children in Mexico live in poverty" (Isaad). Juarez is indicative and symbolic of most cities in Mexico where many fear for their lives due to drug cartel violence or struggle to afford their next meal due to being paid next-to-nothing for backbreaking work. Of course, some Mexican citizens live comfortably, but a majority would leave Mexico in a hurry for the promise of an even slightly better life somewhere else. Being paid forty to fifty dollars a day (as many day laborers are often paid) sounds pretty harsh and unappealing, but that pay period i |

A Hunger Artist - Franz Kafka"Hunger" is a term that defines the physical feeling or the need to eat. However, Kafka's "A Hunger Artist" places a different, stronger, and a deeper meaning to this word. The hunger in the story is not for food. As Kafka describes at the end of the short story, the Hunger Artist states that he was in never hungry, he just never found anything that he liked. The story's utilization of significant symbols, writing style, and imagery, are very precise to express the main theme in the short story about life, consciousness, and existence. The story is about a hunger artist who always fasts for the people to entertain them but later found that he is struggling to keep his reputation and better himself. The people slowly started to lose interest in his act; people even think he cheats and eats food without anyone noticing, and his manager limits his fasting for forty days only even though the hunger artist strongly believes he can last much longer. One of the main symbols is the panther. T |

Human Resources - Compensation and BenefitsIn terms of compensation and benefits, technology companies Google and Facebook can be compared. Google Inc. is an American multinational innovation organization that specializes in internet-related items and services. The company's mission is to take the world's information, organize it, and make it useful and accessible to all individuals. Google hires those who are knowledgeable and determined to reach the goals of the company. Ability is supported over experience, therefore, someone older in age isn't necessarily looked upon as overpowering. The workers all share common visions even though they are very diverse and speak numerous languages, which reflects the global audience that the organization serves. On the other hand, Facebook is an online social networking site. It allows people from all across the world to interact with one another, posts photos, and to share any type of information. Moreover, Facebook and Google are both very similar and different when it comes to compensat |

Abortion - Notes and SourcesAbortion has been an issue that has bothered me, ever since I moved to Texas. Texas being a conservative and pro-life have voiced out against the feticide and attacked abortion clinic and doctors. A friend of mine underwent an illegal abortion from fear of being kicked out of her church and family. This incident touched my heart, and I vowed to myself that I would never commit abortion, regardless of being disgraced or losing my family in the process. Although my stance on abortion makes me dislike the method, many women around the world don't have resources to raise a baby. Also, some women with medical issues with babies can have complications, when giving birth. The doctor recommends abortion for them, but because of the law that finds abortion illegal, both the woman and the baby die in the process. As a result, you can save only one life. Many people hate abortion, even calling murder in some cases. I decided to choose this topic, to see if doctors should be allowed to perform abo |

The Hubble ExperimentThe Hubble space telescope is an awe-inspiring space instrument used by NASA to examine space. It assembles light and increases pictures, and gives space experts the most point by point pictures known to the human race. Hubble has been in operation since April 25, 1990, and celebrated its twentieth year in space April 24, 2010. A quarter century in operation says a ton with respect to Hubble's general life range and productiveness. More than 6000 investigative articles have been dispersed in perspective of Hubble data, with some of its revelations being critical to the point that NASA would have required different satellite missions to satisfy the same results. The fathers of cutting edge rocketry, Hermann Oberth, Robert Goddard, and Konstantin Tsiolkovsky spoke about sending a rocket into Planetary Space, in 1923, which specified sending a telescope to space for one of the first times ever. The motivation behind the telescope was to give more keen pictures to space experts to ponder. |

Film Summary - The Mission1. Martyrdom is defined as giving your life for a noble cause. Forms of punishment a Martyr may experience include torture, rape, starvation, or imprisonment, or any of the ways we humans have developed to torment other people. One example of Martyrdom in the film The Mission, is when Father Julian is crucified over the falls by the Guarani which inspires Father Gabriel to reach out to the tribe himself. After successfully making contact and connecting with the Guarani and establishing a mission to convert the tribe to Catholicism, almost every person involved became a Martyr. Mendoza was shot and fatally wounded after fighting to protect the Guarani from the invading Portuguese and Spanish military and more specifically after he had helped two Guarani children who were struggling on a bridge to run away from the opposing soldiers. The soldiers then fired at the Guarani children, women, and Father Gabriel as they proceeded outside the Church after Eucharist, killing many. They died Mar |

The Science of ElectrolysisAbstract: Electrolysis can be used to plate one type of metal with another. The overall aim of the investigation was to explore which variables had a significant impact on copper electroplating with copper sulphate as the electrolyte solution. Due to the accessibility of the laboratory, the variables were narrowed to which impacted the amount of current passed through an electrolytic cell as this influenced the rate of metal deposition. In this investigation, it was considered whichever variable had a significant impact on amount of metal deposition (AMD) over a fixed time was more efficient, however this is not true for all industries as it does not include factors such as quality. The variables investigated included voltage, concentration of the electrolyte and distance between electrodes. It was found that the relationship of the variables could be explained by via Faraday's Laws of Electrolysis, Ohm's Law and Conductivity Laws. The results concluded, Distance between Electrodes |

Girls, Beauty, and Barbie"Studies show that in 2012 there were more than 236,000 cosmetic surgeries performed on patients between ages 13 to 19 including more than 75,000 surgeries on nose jobs, breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tuck" (Zuckerman, 2012). Our generation filled with social media and is constantly bombarded with images and advertisements of beautiful girls and models showing off their flawless bodies, or unblemished skin; making it hard for normal girls like me to feel beautiful on the inside when everyone focuses on the exterior of a woman. Young women in our society struggle with body image because we are surrounded and reminded daily of a certain "standard of beauty," and plastic surgeons are making big bucks because we believe it. In today's society teens are constantly feeling pressured to get cosmetic surgery, due to media's effects, the influences of celebrity/social lights, and most of them not knowing the risk such procedures can have on their developing bodi |
