Dual Language Analysis - Parisian Culture Texts

Reading these texts, it's easy to spot immediate differences in contextual factors, such as purpose, as well as similarities between some of the topics mentioned and the styles used when describing Paris. Text A, the 'Paris City Guide' is what it says, an informative guide highlighting the Narrators most loved features and attractions of Parisian culture and of the City itself. It offers a rather impersonal account of Paris, not using personal pronouns like 'I' when sharing information, making each opinion sound more factual and less like an actual opinion. This is completely different to Text B, which offers a more personal, wholly opinionated account from the first person point of view of Anna. Using many personal accounts of experiences had in Paris, and using them to build a picture of Paris to the audience. One difference between the texts is the purpose. Text A, being a City Guide, aims to give tourists some ideas of what Paris has to offer, using subject-specific lexis such as 'Cha

The Sports Doping Controversy

While the use of drugs within sports is a growing controversial debate, the use of performance-enhancing drugs by professional athletes has been acknowledged as a problem since the early 1960's. (Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sports) Multiple major health risks follow the uses of performance enhancement drugs. The prohibition of drugs within sports would serve as an all around benefit to an athlete's lifelong mental and physical health. Sports doping prohibition would positively affect the ways in which professional athletes are role modeling the younger generation of athletes. Role modeling would not only benefit today's generation of professional athletes but the future athletes as well. The prohibition of the use of drugs within sports would provide a fair playing field to all athletes. The use of drugs within sports should be prohibited because of the health risks, as well as role modeling and righteousness of the sport. First and foremost, the uses of drugs within sports ha

Was Édouard Manet an Impressionist Painter?

It is impossible to respond to such a question without first defining the term Impressionism, knowing what the Impressionist movement was and also knowing what it meant to be an Impressionist. The author of 'How To Paint And Draw', Bodo W. Jaxtheimer had this to say on Impressionism, "It would be wrong to regard Impressionism as a break in the development of art, although it contradicted so much that had gone before... Impressionism is better regarded as an apex of a symmetrical curve which begins by turning away from naturalism." The term 'Impressionism' is used to define the style of art that emerged in the 19th century beginning in Paris, France and later sweeping across Europe in not only painting but in other art forms like sculpture, literature and photography. With Impressionism we see the first step into modern art, with artists paying less attention to fine finish and detail and instead trying to capture moments as they happened, the sensory effect of

Smokers who have tried quitting smoking before, consider stopping this addiction one of the most challenging trials one can face. Smoking is not only a physical addiction but also a psychological addiction. There are many methods to help smokers kick this addiction. For example, nicotine replacement therapies are used popularly and have helped many people stop smoking. Also, electronic cigarettes (or e-cigarette) are found to help smokers quit smoking. However, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated on their website in July 2015, "E-cigarettes have not been fully studied, so customers currently don't know the potential risks of e-cigarettes when used as intended." Therefore, e-cigarettes are potentially harmful, and it is still not a good method to quit smoking. E-cigarettes, howe

An Essay on Honesty

Honesty is one of the treasured values of human being. Living life honestly means opening oneself freely and exposing one's true self to others. Honesty is essential because it acts as the glue holding people together. Moreover, honesty helps a person to conquer problems and excel in his life. However, is this always right to tell truth? First of all, honesty is the foundation upon which a person builds any relationship with his loved ones such as family or friends. By being honest to his loved ones, he will make them feel that they are trustworthy and closed enough for him to totally expose his true self. Thus, they are more assured that he values them and their relationship. The sweetness in the relationship, therefore, is more likely to remain. In contrast, a person will endanger his relationship with others even if he tells lies just for once. For example, a child tells his mother that he will go to the library to study. However, he ends up g

Looks Aren't Everything. Believe Me, I'm a Model.

In October of 2012, Cameron Russell gave a TED talk she entitled, "Looks Aren't Everything. Believe Me, I'm a Model." Russell has spent the last ten years modeling-a Victoria's Secret favorite-ands has appeared in multiple international editions of Vogue as well as in ads for brands like Ralph Lauren. In the TED talk she discussed what it is like to be looked as a model, how her life has been impacted as a model and the process of how she became a model. One thing I really enjoyed in her TED talk was her main point: looks aren't everything! Yes being model does involve looks and body image a lot but she covers some very good points that there is more to a model than appearance. I chose this TED talk because I thought it was a very interesting and I personally wanted to know what the point of view is like for a model and why "looks were not everything", because up until this video I was also someone who thought that when one is a model looks are a huge priority. In the aftermath, the House of Commons and Lords solidified a key role for Parliament in governing the country and During the Glorious Revolution the Whig and Tory parties cooperated in discontinuing the Stuart dynasty and seating William III of Orange on the throne of England, Scotland, and Ireland. It was during this period that the two parties, although their differences were ameliorated to an extent, moved forward another step in defining their respective party identities. The Tories became identified with Anglicanism and the regional squires, while the Whigs came to represent the wealthy middle class and aristocracy. Given that Parliament developed fiscal and implicit constitutional power through the Declaration of Rights; both parties grew in distinction and size, eager to seize

The British Conservative Period: 1951 – 1964

To what extent can the period of Conservative dominance between 1951 and 1964 be viewed as the 'thirteen wasted years'? Prior to the 1964 election, Labour's campaign described the period of 1951 – 1964 as the 'thirteen wasted years'. Macmillan, Conservative prime minister 1957 – 63, contradicts Labour's view as when he famously said the people had "never had it so good". However, t There are reasons to suggest agree with Labour's smear can be argued to some extent. Nonetheless, several economical, political and social factors support Macmillan's statement. Player's Role in Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead

Tom Stoppard's play entitled Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is one that presents a unique perspective to storytelling. The play follows Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two side-characters from the revered Hamlet by William Shakespeare, who appear in the initial play briefly. If someone had read or seen a production of Hamlet, they would know that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are two men assigned to kill Hamlet, who end up being outwitted by the prince and being executed themselves. Stoppard's play takes place at the same time as Shakespeare's play, but solely focuses on Rosencrantz and Guildenstern's succession of events. Even more unique, then, is how the way the story of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern plays out is as if they truly are only a subplot to another larger story, even when it is just the two of them. However, there is one character who seems to be able to drift from the subservient world of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to Hamlet's reality -- "Player". Player's role in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is to be the omniscient figu

Vietnam, the heart and soul of teenage rebellion to the government for creating a draft that sent over the creative and intelligent youth, was a war that deemed to get rid of the political idea, communism, which spread as quick as the napalm that blazed over the serene green landscapes. The soldiers carried loneliness, uncertainty of the truth of war, and the heavy burden of physical and emotion weight; Tim O'Brien uses war related imagery to symbolize the vim of storytelling in his book "The Things They Carried". So the doctor equips her with and epidural and says; now it's time to wait. She lays there numb and almost lifeless and grabs me by the hands as I'm seated in the chair on her left. Improving Our Lives with Meditation

Every year, many people strive to make changes to better themselves. A new year is a new start and the perfect time to be motivated to make a change or implement something new. Meditation is one of the few practices that many people take to during the new year. Meditation has been described as "medication" because of it's ability to help improve several health conditions (Willits). Meditation dates back thousands of years to ancient India (Chow). In addition, 20% of teenagers ages 13-18 live with or at one point in their life will live with a mental health condition, which can be prevented with mediation ("Mental Disorders"). Delusions in The Glass Menagerie

'The Glass Menagerie' by Tennessee Williams is a play in which Tom, the narrator and protagonist, has to deal with the idea of delusion. The play – which explores the themes of abandonment and the impossibility of true escape - is set in St Louis in the late 1930s. After his father abandoned his family, Tom Wingfield is left to support his overbearing mother, Amanda, and his painfully shy sister, Laura. Tom is a dreamer who is desperate to change his circumstances: he struggles to live with his domineering mother and he longs to quit his mundane job at the shoe factory. Yet Tom's love for his 'crippled' sister means that he cannot follow his dreams guilt free. The fantasy Amanda lives in gives us a greater insight into how delusion revolves around the Wingfield family and how it is a central concern in the play and contributes highly to Tom's decision to leave. Williams used various ways such as imageries, exaggerations to convey the delusions to the audience. From the outse

Analysis of Because I Could Not Stop for Death

The poem 'Because I could not Stop for Death" is one of the most popular poems of the American poet, Emily Dickinson. Dickinson uses a technique to transport her message to the readers. The poem is divided in five quatrains. This style gives unity and makes it easier to read. The main speaker in this poem is a woman who is visited by a man and offers her a ride. The idea of death is not shown as isolated or fearful, but more peaceful and relaxed. Death is described by the speaker as a person rather than an occasion in a person's life. It is pictured as man who gives the speaker the ride of eternity. Dickinson dramatizes the conflict of life and the peaceful eternity of death. She develops an unusual interpretation of death, and while doing this, she creates images that provoke distinctive thoughts. Throughout the poem, Dickinson uses different types of figurative language, and imagery like metaphor, repetition and symbolism and others; these help her create a poem that peop
