The Impact of Facebook on Today's SocietyThe purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the topic of social networking. Specifically it will discuss the impact of the social networking site Facebook on today's society. Facebook has become a phenomenon for the social networking set, and what makes that so amazing is that Facebook did not even exist until 2004. Three college students created it to allow other students to network and meet each other, and it has caught on with young people around the globe. What impact does Facebook have on today's technologically advanced society? It allows people who probably never would have met each other in person to communicate, it creates new relationships and friendships, and it places distance between people who could communicate in person but instead choose to communicate online, instead. It is just another element of society that is interested in sharing information with the intimacy of a close, personal relationship. Facebook is nothing more than a medium for c |

Evaluating the Negative Effects of Rap MusicIdolizing violence, theft, and the glamorized and often completely distorted view of gang life, rap music creates more social problems than it cures, and often harms the most impressionable segment of our society, the children. Studies of 14 to 18 year old African-American girls show that rap music and its lyrics, in addition to its graphic and often violent videos, encourage and promote not just a single deviant behavior, but a string of them (Wingwood, DiClemente, Bernhardt, Harrington, et al, 437 - 439). Children emulate what rappers promote, from easy money from illegal activity, to drug abuse, to the distorted and seemingly immortal life of being in a gang where ironically one's mortality is the only reality. Rap music emanated from the struggle of young African-Americans to find their way in a global economy that prizes knowledge and hard work over brutality and toughness, and their music reflects this frustration. |

Analysis of California's Ban on Same-Sex Marriage - Proposition 8The debate of whether California's ban on same-sex marriage, Proposition 8, is constitutional or not was brought to a vote during the elections held in 2008 throughout that state. Initially contested by the City of San Francisco, the legal progression of this legislation and eventual proposition portrays the struggle gays and lesbians have for equal representation under the law (Barron, 2218, 2219). The precedent many gay and lesbian activists cite is Perez versus Sharp, where the California Supreme Court ruled that Sylvester Davis, an African-American man returning from service in World War II and Andrea Perez, a daughter of Mexican immigrants, could marry in the state of California (Lau, 1271 - 1274). Gay and lesbian activities have adopted this specific legislation as their foundation fro arguing against the constitutionality of banning same-sex marriage in California. Same-sex marriages are equated as being comparable to racially diverse and ethnic marriages by those opposing the ban on same-sex marriages. |

Compare and Contrast Gay and Straight Marriages from A Parenting PerspectiveThe paradoxes of being a gay or lesbian parent have in the last ten years become less severe, yet there is still a stigma attached to same-sex couples who attempt to adopt or have children through artificial insemination (Lindsay, Perlesz, Brown, McNair, et al., 2006). Debates as to which type of parenting is the most effective at socialization and developing healthy self-esteem pervade much of the popular press (Krause, 2000) with a tendency to categorize same- sex parents as being somehow less credible or capable of being empathic, supportive or disciplinarian in their approaches to raising their children. In fact there is evidence showing that entirely new forms of family and parenting arrangements are emerging, many of which provide unique forms of support for children's learning and socialization needs (Almack, 2008). The economic factors that are driving families to become more cohesive (Black, Sanders, Taylor, 2007) have also shown to be contributory to better parenting as well. |

Analysis of the Pros and Cons of Gay MarriageIn evaluating the pros and cons of gay marriage, there are the moral, legal and broader sociological implications to consider. There are also the issues of the economics of how gay couples can financially be responsible for each other, specifically in the areas of healthcare, elderly care and care-giving when they are elderly (Black, Sanders, Taylor, 2007). In short, the entire foundation of how gay marriages are legally interpreted by law is a crucial aspect of assessing the pros and cons of gay marriage. The intent of this paper is to provide an assessment of the pros and cons of gay marriage primarily from a legal standpoint as these are the issues that most define a same-sex couple as having the rights as a heterosexual couple (Ingram, 1997). |

Assessing the Impact of Lower gas prices in Alterative Fuel Vehicles and the Consumption of Alternative FuelsThe unpredictability of gas prices and their continued lack of elasticity of price relative to volume is forcing auto manufacturers to accelerate the development of vehicles that can operate on alternative fuels including ethanol, electric-based, hybrid electricity-gasoline engines, and hydrogen-based engine technologies. Richard Wagoner, CEO of General Motors, has made the point in one of his most often-quoted speeches that his company is pioneering the development of electricity-based vehicles that will be as attractive in design and price as the Volt (Wagoner, 2007). In addition, Beth Lowery, Vice President of Environment and Energy for General Motors champions E85, a high grade of ethanol that is the basis of GM's development efforts. Conversely the approach Toyota is taking is to concentrate on a gradual shift away from hybrid gasoline-electric engines to eventually adopt entirely electrically-based ones that can be plugged in like an appliance (Voelcker, 2008). |

An Analysis of the Gettysburg AddressThe Gettysburg Address is one of the most unique oratories in U.S. history due to its brevity in an era where two to three hour debates were common, in its bluntness and focus of preserving the Union of the United States (Stow, 195 - 198), and its call to the duty of reconciliation as a nation based on the ultimate price being paid by those who died in Gettysburg. President Lincoln also acknowledges that the nation is very young, yet also acknowledges the fact that there have been very painful times in the nations' history that forced it to come back from the brink of self-destruction and grow stronger as a result. In this short, concise and impactful speech, Lincoln calls for unity and the need for creating a new sense of shared vision for the country. |
