A Separate Peace: PsychoanalysisAs an individual grows, he/she passes through different developmental phases, both physical and psychological. The developmental phases are both at the conscious level and unconscious level. In a conscious state of mind, a person interacts with the society and tends to do real thinking and make decisions accordingly. However, in an unconscious state of mind, it is the impulses and instincts that dictate the human behavior. It would be fair to interpret unconscious state of mind as a natural state of mind, since a human is not aware of the natural instincts and drives. Many psychologists believe the unconscious mind to be made of drives for power, love and other impulses. In John Knowles's novel, "A Separate Peace", characters undergo dramatic transformations. The Id, Ego, and Superego are the three components of human personality and psyche. In the novel, these three personality components are critical. Also, the key concepts of primal fears and repression are operated throughout the t |

The Effects of AlcoholAlcohol can be traced back to ancient times when Egyptians used beer and wine for ritual and celebratory purposes (Hanson 1995). Osiris, the god of wine, was praised throughout the entire land of Egypt. The Egyptians believed that this important god also invented beer, a beverage that was considered a necessity of life and was brewed in the home. Both beer and wine were created for and sacrificed to the gods. Fast-forward 12,000 years and the variety of alcohol has become so numerous, people no longer need a reason to drink. However, most of the population is unaware of the chemical reaction that is occurring within their body every time they take a sip. It has always been evident that alcohol has an effect on brain function, which in-turn impairs the behavior of a person. Not only has alcohol been linked to multiple physical issues but also mental and emotional. When alcohol is consumed it can create acetaldehyde in the brain to allow a chemical reaction to take place with other eleme |

Overview of Kaplan UniversityAbstract Kaplan University is an online educational institution that provides over 125 associate, bachelor, and graduate degrees in a variety of programs. It is based on technology in that it offers its services via the Internet and web based applications. This approach appeals to segments of the population that are under-served by traditional educational institutions. Major strengths of Kaplan are that it has a strong presence in these markets and offers a great deal of assistance in obtaining financing for each student's educational goals. It has a weak campus model that is still being developed and is expected to increase steadily in the future. The online education market has a number of strong competitors, but Kaplan has consistently offered well priced programs that appeal to many students and thus has been very successful at expanding its market share and gaining credibility as an institution of higher learning. Baptism and the Catholic ChurchBaptism is a ritual performed by many churches. Each church has a meaning and reason behind the ceremony and beliefs involved but for the Catholic Church it is a means of entering into a community with Christ, with fellow followers, and a gift full of grace and faith. It is the first initiation into the Catholic faith followed by Holy Communion and Confirmation. Baptism is the Door to Gods House. Baptism is not only a means for children but since the Second Vatican Council reformed the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults in 1972; it has been reintroduced for Adults to enter into or carry on the mission of what Christ wanted for his church. Baptism is performed through many symbols and rituals which make up the elements and commitments made to God, through Gods instructions performed in the Church. For the purpose of this research essay the Baptism written about is based on infant baptism. Theology of the Sacrament The sacrament of Baptism is the beginning of a new life with Chri |

The Colonist's Claim for IndependenceIn 1763, the American colonists were excited as they expected to gain honor and prestige after helping win the French and Indian War with the British. However, the British had a different perspective of the future as the war had doubled it's national debt. As Britain started raising taxes in the colonies, the colonists believed that it was not reasonable because the colonists had helped passionately with their money and effort. They believed it was unfair. As their more peaceful measures in the early stages of this debate did not work well, they began to think of war as a final option. War was not decided upon in a single day; the accumulated sequence of events led them to declare war. Eventually, the war between Britain and the colonists occurred in 1774. The American colonists were justified in declaring independence from England because widespread enlightenment ideas justified their independence, colonists had to pay unfairly charged taxes, and important decisions that were related to colonists' lives were made without colonial representation. First, their declaration of independence was justified by the enlightenment ideas that were spread at the time. Colon |

Ballet, Perfectionism and Black SwanRina Angela Corpus talks about the perfectionism that revolves around ballerinas portrayed in Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan". She clearly mentions a number of instances in the movie that are portrayed accurately, which people overlook on a daily basis. In her review, she mentions that the ballet world is a male dominated craft although the aesthetics of such an art have always been an idealization of the female form. As a result of this ballet system, female dancers are driven to become tenacious competitors and are forced to live absurd lives filled with self-harm and a number of different psychological disorders like anorexia and bulimia in the pursuit for perfection. The review also brings to life the sad truth about how utterly painful it is to be an artistic dancer from the clothes and shoes they wear to the victimization they face from their choreographers and their own minds which are closed to anything but perfection. This review is probably the most important in defining th |

The Mongol Trading NetworkThe Mongol Trading Network By World History Honors April 22, 2013 During the thirteenth century, the Mongol empire dominated Eurasia through the conquests of Genghis Khan and several of his descendants. His territorial conquests allowed for the establishment of trade routes across great distances. This merger of lands permitted the Mongol empire to become an agent for the exchange of ideas and goods on an international scale. There were multiple causes that motivated the Mongols to connect the great nations of the time, including desires for luxury trade items and knowledge.1 After the Mongol's trading network was founded, it slowly began to spread throughout the empire and began to cause major changes in the economies of areas such as China and Europe, as well as shaped what would become the modern world in the process. After conquering the Silk Road, a network of trade networks that connected East, South, and Western Asia with Europe, Genghis Khan realized how importan |

Adapting and Overcoming in LiteratureWhen people are placed in a new environment, they need to either adapt and overcome or they will submit to their fear and self-destruct. They destroy themselves by trying to be what, in truth, is worse than what they had. The main characters in "The Scarlet Ibis"", "The Most Dangerous Game"", and "The Necklace" prove this. In "The Scarlet Ibis, " Brother acts out of pride and embarrassment towards his disabled brother, Doodle, and eventually causes Doodle's death. Mathilde in Guy Maupassant's story "The Necklace"" wishes to be a member of the upper class, but her envy leads to devastating consequences when she loses the necklace she is lent. She end up lost everything and must work relentlessly for ten years to pay for the replacement, all because she didn't tell the truth. "The Most Dangerous Game"," by Richard Connell, demonstrates how fear can be a great motivator. Supply and Demand in the US and GloballyAn economy is the management of the production and distribution of resources including labor, capital and land resources in a particular area of the world. What is this "production and distribution" that keeps our economy growing and running; nonetheless, the strength of the economy? The two terms being searched for are 'supply' and 'demand'. Though supply and demand are two different words with two completely different meanings, they both go hand-in-hand. Supply is simply how much of something one has or how much of something is readily available; demand is how much the people want of something. After much extensive studying and research, it has been concluded that supply and demand is the most basic concept of the economy and throughout time its definition has remained the same, but the people of each generation come up with ways to show the extent of its meaning. Road Transportation in PenangTransportation is a key logistics activity that provide for the movement of materials and goods from point of origin to point of consumption, and perhaps to their ultimate point of disposal as well. Transportation involves several selections of modes (e.g., air, rail, water, truck, or pipeline), the routing of shipments, assuring compliance with regulations in the region of the country where shipment is occurring, and selection of the carrier. Transport integration is an essential port or terminal (rail/air) function of a modern seaport airport node in which a multimodal transport system develops. The growth of these is fundamentally affected by four sets of separate factors: the land situation, the water situation, the land site, and the water site. The balance between these factors influences port city growth which depends on the functions of the effective integration of land use and the road network system. For that reason, the integration of land use and a transportation network sy |

William Wilson and The TunnelLiterature has a strange ability to force an individual to look introspectively at their own existence and to question their own qualities - to self-evaluate. In the case of the chosen pieces, short story "William Wilson"" by Edgar Allan Poe and the poem "The Tunnel"" by Mark Strand, both stories slowly draw the reader into an empathy with the main characters. The short story by Poe forces the reader to attempt to find veiled redeeming qualities within the main character, William Wilson. Even as Wilson chooses to alter his own name for the story, it is obvious that his own personal qualities do not lend themselves to qualities that would easily escort an individual in popularity as an adult. Similarly, the odd behaviors of the unnamed main character in Mark Strand's "The Tunnel"" also lead one to conjecture the respectable and upright virtues of a character that we cannot help but to feel empathy and compassion for. As in any great literary work, both accounts engage the mind in such a |

The Asian Shoji ScreenThere are people from Japan, Korea, China, Thailand, and Vietnam that use their distinct but similar indoor folding screens. Shoji is Japanese while Koreans call itë³ 'í'. Personally, I feel as if Shoji screens accentuate its surroundings with unseen flows of energy and feeling of warmth. My ë³ 'í' is 6 feet high and has a ebony black background with asymmetrical plot of flowers centered in the middle of the scenery. Therefore, my shoji screen gives me meaningful existence and cultural connection to the old traditional ways of pre-colonial Asia. First, my Shoji folding screen is in my bedroom placed at the corner of the far right side of the wall. I use it as decoration, although others might use it as cloth rack and to maintain privacy. Usually, when I have free time, I will stare at my Shoji screen because I sometimes imagine and recall past memories in which my mother, father, and relatives from both sides could actually bond and breathe together. The first adoptive family was white but after realizing that Bessie was half African American (her father was black), she was returned to her mother. Soon later Bessie was placed with a black family. Bessie's birth mother died when she was only six years old and at that point, all contact with her real birth family was lost. Bessie Head does not reveal much about her early years, leaving it to speculation that her childhood wasn't an easy one. Bessie Head learned at a very young age that she was adopted and she learned of it in a very cruel manner. Away from home at boarding school, where she was sent by her parents, she was told the that she was an adopted child. When she |

The Musical Guys and DollsThe Hannon Theater Company's adaptation of "Guys and Dolls" reflects a tremendous amount of work on the part of the actors and actresses, the directors and production staff, the orchestra, and the remainder of the crew. This musical is not an easy one to produce at this level. However, they did an excellent job at taking us back to the corruption in New York in the early twentieth century. This musical dealt with the dichotomy between organized crime in New York and organized religion during this era. There is a sharp contrast between the gangsters whose life is based on gambling and the missionaries whose goal was to save sinners and encourage them to repent. The simplistic themes of being a saint versus a sinner gets intermixed with love and trust. Despite having recently met, it takes a while for the love-struck couple, Sky and Sarah, to trust each other. Each has t |

How and why do you believe this philosophy or religion change as it entered a new area and interacted with a new people?" Monasticism in is thought to have began around the 3rd to 4th century AD, when St. Paul was trying to avoid persecution from Decius, in which he fled to a cave in the desert of Egypt. It has been spread since that time and can be seen in many forms of Christianity and is still going on today. This concept can be described as, one who would become a hermit, isolating their selves from society, giving up all material possessions and pleasures, begging for |

American Indians and the Right to RevoltThe history of the American Indian had the makings of a revolution from the moment white men set foot on their land. It was soon after first step that mistreatment of the American Indians began. Life for the Indians was never easy, and it only became worse as the white man moved into their areas. The treaties between the Indians and the new white invaders were not worth the paper on which they were written. Rightfully so, the Indians became angry and tired of their treatment by white men and their persecution laid the foundational blocks leading up to the violent events of the Indian Revolution. After the Indian Reorganization Act which was an attempt to assimilate the Indians into the white man's world, the Indians faced total failure. The two worlds were so different and the white man so selfish that there was no possible way that the two cultures could work and exist together. The white men used their numbers and militia to their advantage, becoming even more brutal, wrongfully imprisoning the Indians and removing their freedoms. This sent the Indians in search of support and spirituality and this led the way to the creation of AIM - the American Indian Movement - an org |

Obesity and OralityFew psychoanalytic concepts have been used as widely as the concept of instinct for explaining abnormal development. Under this orientation, obesity and other eating disorders are conceived of as resulting from disturbances during the oral phase. Yet the concept of instinct has been widely debated. Freud himself proposed many theoretical formulations and remained critical of all his efforts to formulate a fixed theory of instinct. A definite progression can be recognized in his concept of the instinctual drives, represented in the id, from the reflex arc scheme of a self-contained closed system, unrelated to the outer world (1915), toward a more modern biological view of instinct as "a tendency innate in living organic matter impelling it towards the reinstatement of an earlier condition, one which it had to abandon under the influence of external disturbing forces" [emphasis added]; i.e., instincts are influenced by and interact with life experiences (1920). The notion persists that |

Absenteeism in the WorkplaceAbstract This paper discusses major reasons that workers are absent. It looks at absenteeism trends that have emerged in recent years and examines ways that an employer can combat this phenomenon. The paper also discusses several predictors of absenteeism including age, education, and health. Problem Statement There are various reasons why there is employee absenteeism. I plan to look at the causes and suggest what can be done to reduce it. According to Benefits.org, absenteeism is a failure of employees reporting for work when they are scheduled to work. Bonacu (2005) points out in the CCH Unscheduled Absence Survey employee absenteeism costs organizations an average of $660 per employee in 2005. There is a gamut of causes of absenteeism from the lack of job satisfaction, personal problems at home, transportation problems, to boredom on the job. Absenteeism also causes a decrease in productivity which in the long run affects staff morale. Employee absences consist of scheduled |

Death Be Not Proud and WitJohn Donne's poetry and Margaret Edson's Wit both explore the notion of mortality. Through comparing these two texts, in individual is able to find connections and therefore gain a deeper understanding. There are particular scenes in Edson's Wit that explore the main character, Vivian Bearing, exploring the idea of mortality. There are also a great deal of Donne's poems with 'Death Be Not Proud' and 'This is My Playes Last Scene' conveying the theme the most. Themes of mortality that these scenes and poems particularly show connections between are acceptance of death, and the opposite, avoiding the concept of death. Acceptance of death is explored in both Donne and Edson's texts towards the conclusion of each text. One particular scene in Margaret Edson's Wit, is when Vivian is in the hospital room talking to Susie the nurse about the action to be taken if Vivian's heart stops beating. This scene clearly conveys the realization from Vivian that her disease has really overtaken her bod |

Theory of Demand Side EconomicsOscar Wilde, an Irish writer, once said "to do nothing at all is the most difficult thing in the world, the most difficult and the most intellectual." While the most intellectual people are believed to be in charge of our world's financial systems, those who have supported big-money stimulus's flooding the free market prove to be our world's most un-intellectual. However when evaluating the Federal Reserve (FED), European Central Bank (ECB), or the Peoples Bank of China (PBC) the predicament remains the same. Is it more cost effective during a fiscal trough to lower interest rates dramatically and increase governmental spending? Or is better to do nothing? This query remains the same; to truly know what is better for an economy, the benefits and drawbacks of demand-side economics must be evaluated. As it is known, Keynesian economists believe that, in the short run, productive activity is influenced by aggregate demand, and that aggregate demand, contrary to Say's Law, does no |
