Kandinsky, Matisse and Malevich

According to Wassily Kandinsky: ʻAn artist who sees that the imitation of natural appearances, however artistic, is not for him, the kind of creative artist who wants to express his own inner world, sees with envy how naturally and easily such goals can be attained in music, the least material of the arts today. It is understandable if he turns towards it and tries to find the same means in his own art. Hence the current search for rhythm in painting, for mathematical, abstract construction, the value placed today upon the repetition of colored tones, the way colors are set in motion...ʼ Abstract art, is an art form not containing an image of the outside world. It has no starting or ending point in nature. "The artist no longer names, he expresses. It is for the spectator to catch, by his own reactions, the significance of what is expressed"1. According to Kandinsky, as stated, expressing one's own inner world is more meaningful, than to imitate nature. He also

The Importance of Secondary Sources

In the autobiography genre, it can be hard to fully grasp where the author is coming from when he or she describes a point in his or her story without a secondary source. Secondary sources are necessary when understanding the readings of a primary source because of the content that is usually displayed within them. In most cases, secondary sources are used as personal perspectives of the author, outside of the primary topic. Secondary sources don't necessarily have anything to do with the author's storyline in the primary source. The secondary source provides extra information on the primary source and helps you comprehend the writing style and voice that the author uses in his or her autobiography. Within my Field Research Group, we all would agree on a similar conclusion. During my interview time with Logan Johnston, Jake Snow, Mike Chiappini, and Tim McMackin, we agreed that a secondary source is a necessity before reading a primary source. The primary sources we discussed would in

Conflict Resolution with My Husband

Conflict occurs between people in all kinds of relationships whether it be between mother and child or between spouses. Conflict by itself is neither good nor bad. Anyhow, the manner in which conflict is handled determines whether it is effective or ineffective. Conflict has the potential for either a great deal of devastation or much creativity and positive social change. There is one conflict that I have been having with my husband just about every other month and it has been ticking me off. I am a full tine college student and a stay at home mother of two children. My husband is the provider and when he gets paid, I'm the one who deposits his check and handles the finances. We have separate checking accounts, but we both have access to each other's accounts at all times. So when it's time to pay the bills, I use his account. We have a calendar hanging in our room with all of the due dates displayed and the amount of each bill written on the day it's due.

Erikson and the Eight Stages of Development

The best method for studying human social development is by using Erikson's Eight Stages of Development. These stages are evident from birth, adulthood, and senior years. Erikson's first analysis is trust versus mistrust. This stage begins at birth and continues until about one year of age. The central issue that infant's resolve in this stage is "can I trust others?" For example, and infant must be held, touched and nurtured by its mother. If a caregiver is unresponsive to the infant's needs and they go unmet, the balance of trust will tip in the direction of mistrust. Erikson believed "for development to proceed optimally, a healthy balance between the terms conflate must be struck." It is important to development to have a successful resolution of this stage because it lays the foundation for each additional stage. Aut

Should Adopted Children Have Access to Their Birth Records?

Adoption is the statutory process of terminating a parent's legal rights and duties for biological children and substituting rights to adoptive parent or parents. Responsibilities and rights are transferred to the adoptive parents. In the past twenty years states have been implementing a Confidential Intermediary system also called the CI system. This system allows adoptees access to identifying information regarding their birth family, this system makes contact with the birth parents to obtain a waiver to release information, if not found or parents do not agree to have information disclosed then the file will be locked back up. Accessing birth parents information may be of 3 different types; Non-Identifying, Identifying and Medical information. Non-Identifying information may include appearance, religion, race, education and occupation, the agency that arranged adoption and facts and circumstances relating to cause of adoption. Identifying information includes birth parents an

Society and Social Issues

Controlling government issues is important element and reinforces our success as nation. These articles, however, have forced me to contemplate that issues surrounding life of individuals within the nation are equally important. All these readings share a basic theme; the theme is society and social issues. In last decade there have been noteworthy advancements in attaining socio-economic developments, advocating extensive support for democratic values and strengthening the framework of social Justice through ample social work. However at the same time the issues regarding in-equal social justice have not only been the recurring theme but are now expanding in many parts of the world. To thwart the propagation of social tensions due to inequal

An Argument for the Unschooling Method

According to many supporters of non-traditional schooling methods, today's current educational system is not only ineffective at enabling children to succeed in the learning process, it is actually preventing students from attaining their true scholastic capabilities. One example of such a non-traditional schooling method is the idea of unschooling, which, explained briefly, is the exact opposite of the traditional schooling method we are familiar with today. Proponents of the unschooling method frown upon regimented curriculum's and stress-inducing examination systems. Rather, they propose that children learn best when they are left to their own devices to learn through natural life experiences (with the parent being involved in the creation of various learning scenarios). Unschooler's hold that such instruments of traditional schooling are not conducive to a student's utmost learning, and that the removal of such educational features represents a method that allows each student to d

Bakery Wisdom

July of freshman summer, I stood before a smorgasbord of pastries. Mimi, the owner of Missouri Bakery had hired me and rescued me from a boring summer. Rather than senselessly staring at my ceiling, I spent the day on my feet sweeping up flour, sugaring cream puffs, and refilling tray after tray of cookies. Within a week, I mastered stocking and Mimi allowed me to sell. The store might as well have been the oven. While blistering heat emanated from the kitchen, I noticed that nothing had any prices or descriptions listed anywhere, and the cash register, more like an ancient typewriter, did not calculate change. Customers packed the place. Each one demanded superb service and the highest quality bread and sweets. Furthermore, I found myself surrounded by the five prettiest co-workers I had ever seen! My anxiety nearly reached its boiling point. Customers started out as my Achilles' heel. My first, a grumpy old woman, exploded when I accidentally counted

Legal Case Analysis from a Nursing Viewpoint

As medicine continues to grow and become more advanced, we as a country are forced to address many issues as they pertain to our future within healthcare as a whole. A few of these issues include healthcare reform, stem-cell research, abortion, and Medicare and Medicaid coverage. These topics are all controversial to say the least. While these issues are important ones, before continuing to advance, I feel we must address and figure out a solution to controversial topics that have been an issue within medicine for quite some time. The act of negligence and the use, or misuse, of living wills, advanced directives, and do not resuscitate (DNR) orders have been the topic of many ethical debates for years. While on the surface they may not seem related, over the years negligence by healthcare providers have led to situations that resulted in ones end of life wishes to be questioned. An example of this can be found in the court case, Myrna Wheelock, et al. v. Jesse Thomas Doe

From Physical Land to a Metaphysical Kingdom

Despite the fact that the Hebrew and Greek Bibles are bound together into one text, the two function in ways that are often difficult to reconcile. For instance, the two sets of scriptures involve radically different stories and characters that make them seem, at least initially, to have more points of divergence than convergence. However, the Greek Bible can ultimately be understood as responding to the struggles that the Hebrew Bible has with the meaning of God's covenant promise of land for his people. This covenant promise of land frames the entirety of the Hebrew Bible as is evidenced by the fact that, after it is first given by God to Abraham, it is notably repeated to each of the successive patriarchs. Thus, when the Israelite's are exiled from the land of the covenant, questions inevitably arise as to what the existing relationship is between the Israelite's and their God, and, without answers to these questions, the narrative simply ends. The introduction of the Greek Bible in

Rain of Gold and Angela's Ashes

The endings of Rain of Gold and Angela's Ashes both signify a sense of achievement and atonement. Both stories articulate the struggles of living in poverty while trying to migrate to the United States with the ambition of obtaining a better and more satisfying life. In order to truly understand the endings to both stories, one must evaluate the obstacles both families underwent to finally attain life in America. In Rain of Gold, Mexican families had dreams of a better life in America. Their lives were devastated by the Mexican Revolution, and their gold mines were taken from them. These events led to a life filled with struggle and freight. Keeping guard of the border were well-nourished American soldiers who were well dressed in exquisite uniforms. Mexicans in Rain of Gold could only dream of someday being well dressed and well fed. Following a life of struggle, bloodshed, and hard work, the families in Rain of Gold arrive in America. However, even in America Lupe's family still had to jump through h

Euthanasia and the Right to Die

Webster's dictionary defines the word "euthanasia" as the practice of killing someone who is very ill and will never get better in order to end their suffering, usually done at their request or with their consent. At first, the world "euthanasia" was used when referring to animals, but eventually became associated with humans. Terminally-ill patients want to control their dying process and some choose to die with euthanasia. Sometimes they want others to assist them. This is called assisted suicide, and it relieves the pain of patients who face inevitable death. It allows people to die with dignity. Assisted suicide should be legalized. Legalization of assisted suicide is a hot issue related to human rights. When asked about euthanasia, college student Susan Sung stated that, "I'm in favor with euthanasia. Because who would want to die with experiencing pain? Even I would want to die with no pain." Many people agree with Susan, that one of the reasons for favoring the legalization of euthanasia is because people have the right to die. Like Susan, all people don't want to die with extreme pain, so they should be able to choose how to die. All people have the right to

Euripides & The Medea

The play Medea, by Euripides begins as any good play of substance does, opening in a heightened sense of turmoil and conflict. The story opens with the wailing sounds of a woman crying; a desperate woman at the end of her pitiful rope weeping over her broken heart; a heart that was destroyed by her adulteress husband, Jason. Unannounced to his wife Medea, Jason decided to remarry into royalty. He wed the daughter of Creon, king of Corinth; which is also the Greek city where the play is set. This is the root of all the problems that stem from this play and its main characters. At the start of the play you are met by the family's nurse who recalls the events that have led Medea and her two children to their current condition. She talks of how Jason and Medea had fled to Corinth together in exile. There they had settled down and were quite content until Jason became restless and abandoned Medea and their children. Jason's wickedness wounded Medea deeply and had since kept her i

Mountain Top Removal: Destroying Appalachia

The Earth is comprised of many distinctive biomes that facilitate the evolution of a variety of different ecosystems. In eastern North America, the United States is comprised of several geologically different ecosystems. From East to West the provinces follow as stated: coastal plain, piedmont, Blue Ridge Mountains, valley and ridge, and the Appalachian plateau. Each province is characteristically unique when it comes to the biodiversity of flora and fauna. In the western Blue Ridge Mountains and the river and valley province, the biodiversity and topography are being destroyed by coal mining. After the American Civil War, coal mining boomed in the mountainous regions of West Virginia, Kentucky, southwestern Virginia, and Tennessee. The demand for coal rose exponentially throughout the United States during this period due to the Industrial Revolution and the expansion of the railroad system. Although coal mining brought jobs and economical stability to the poverty-stricken h

The Debt by Edith Wharton

Edith Wharton's short story, "The Debt" from her book "Tales of Men and Ghosts", does a great job proving the moral through the title of the story. The story begins with the narrator talking about a man by the name of Galen Dredge. A young man by the name of Archie Lanfear brings home his friend Galen Dredge for a visit during the summer. One day Archie took Galen by Buzzard's Bay, a place where Archie's father, Professor Lanfear worked at in an attempt to introduce him to his father. Galen admired the place by the look of astonishment on his face especially with the fact that there was a biological station nearby that interested Galen. Upon meeting professor Lanfear, Galen looked at him with much respect. Professor Lanfear seeing the boy's enthusiasm took him down to the biological station and from then on the story began to unfold. Professor Lanfear saw something in Galen th

The Disability Rights & LGBT Movement

Ever since the gay liberation' movement began, it has employed the social movements of the 1960's. Since then activists have worked hard to improve the lives of LGBT (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgendered) individuals. Tremendous steps have been taken in many nations, especially in the western world. (Adam, 1995) LGBT protesters have fought in opposition of prejudice in spaces such as employment and housing, acknowledgement of same sex relationships, including rights to partner benefits, custody and adoption of same sex children, and marriage or civil unions. In all of these struggles, the LGBT movement has been opposed by anti gay counter-movements, although the nature of the criticism has varied from political and cultural contexts. (Staggenbord, 2011: 116) One key point that LGBT and disabled individuals have in common is the prejudice and oppression they face in their day to day lives. In the past the LGBT movement have employed other social movements in aiding their progres

Effective Quality Management

After studying the article, it can be acknowledged that the process of Cignet Plastic Corporation is able to produce products. In the article, it is affirmed that there are some setbacks in the making. According to the audit assurance committee, companies have issues that arise from the transferable causes that are originating from the employees in the production process. During the reading, it also indicated that the cause of differences in the method include the variance of raw material, skills and operational competence of employees, longer wait time, etc. That bearing during the process can increase the defect rate of the final good. The distinction between the quality of products can also originate from the various assignments that are assigned to the employees of the production department. Assorted assignments influence the efficiency of the employees and create the hindrance for them to execute their job duties in an efficient manner. It has bearing on the value of the products and services as well as increases the amount of defects in the process. Altering

Night - A Look at Life in Concentration Camps

"Night" can be looked at as a memoir of a young Jewish teenager who grew up in concentration camps. However, even though it technically is not a memoir and our author, Elie Wiesel, has altered details, the story that follows Eliezer through the Holocaust gives its readers a detailed, personal, and emotional look into the Holocaust. This is exactly what historians will know about the Holocaust that other primary sources cannot tell. Even though periodicals and letters tell true accounts of the emotional struggles that thousands of Jewish people went through, this novel gives a full story from beginning to end. Being able to read sections of letters and reading a full story gives the readers a better understanding of the daily struggles Jewish people went through. Night gives its readers a story of a Jewish teenagers point of view during the Holocaust and allows its readers to follow Eliezer's life from when he was taken away until he was finally free. "Night" begins with background i

Temple of Nike Athena

Art and architecture in Greece during the classical period focused on magnificent statues, structures, and vases. This was apparent in Athenian architect Kallikartes' Temple of Athena Nike in Athens, the first Ionic structure built on Acropolis in 427 BC. As common during this time period, art reflected historical events. In this paper, I will discuss the construction and history of the temple and its importance in Greek art. Greek art was an expression of general life. The temple was as much political in purpose as it was aesthetic. Athena Nike was built as an expression of Athens' ambitions to defeat Sparta and become a world power. The temple was dedicated to the goddess Athena, the bringer of victory. It sat atop a hill on the southern edge of the Acropolis facing the Athenian people, who could then worship Athena in hopes for a favorable outcome from the war with Sparta. The white Pentelic marble temple contained four columns front and back, a cella, and a continuous ionic

A Letter to Recommend Paradise of the Blind

I plan to elaborate on the political aspects of Paradise of the Blind by writing a formal letter to the Vietnam government. The Vietnam government banned this book from the country because of the all encompassing political aspects included in the book. In the authors books all of the aspects of life are demonstrated and the total view was an unattractive image for the leaders. This book was banned because it went against what a government hopes to portray to their people. Duong Thu Huong worked for the Communist Youth Brigade at the age of 20 but was expelled from the communist party in 1989. She has been imprisoned numerous times for her outspoken support for human rights and democratic political reform and is no longer allowed to leave Vietnam. In Paradise of the blind, her fourth book written and her fourth book to be banned, she included government acts such as the effects of communists on the people such as the land reform act, and Ratification of Errors. The large political attr

criminal justice

The crime lab has received a fired bullet and a discharged cartridge case from the scene of a shooting. This evidence is submitted to the crime lab for examination. Several weeks later, the police confiscated a semi-automatic pistol from a suspect in the shooting. A semi-automatic pistol is a specific type of handgun with a single barrel and single chamber. These types of guns load a new cartridge into the chamber after each shot. Every time the trigger is pulled, one round is shot from a semi-automatic. Other types of hand guns have multiple chambers and a single barrel, or multiple chambers and multiple barrels, but also have one trigger pull to one round fired. However, these are not classified as semi-automatic pistols. The scientific method is the "tried and true" way to determine the truths from the untruths when trying to determine an outcome or a solution. Very simply, the scientific method consists of the following: 1. Observe something 2. Come up with a hypothesis, or t

Ideas for the Writing Process

For this end of semester's project, you or your team are required to contact an employer near your community or area and conduct an "Employer's Interview". The employer can be a small or large company or contractor that you might want to work for or that can potentially get a job opportunity once you finish your college education. If you are currently working for such an employer, you can contact the most appropriate person in this company and conduct the interview. You must research the company or organization before you perform this interview; find out as much information about the company as possible in order to appear well informed in front of the interviewee and then, when you present your findings, in front of the class. Save the information you have gathered. You will need it later on as you will be creating a report. Once you are well acquainted with the organization/employer, you will contact the most appropriate person either in person, by phone or via email and request

Position Paper on the Use of Dynamite

INTRODUCTION Jim, our client has suffered severe injuries after an employee of a dynamite blast company, contracted by the State of Ohio, was negligent in failing to prevent him from entering its danger zone. The company claims, notwithstanding the employee's error, the street warning sign was sufficient to prevent harm. ARGUEMENT In order to win a claim of negligence, four elements must be shown by Plaintiff against Defendant, that of 1) duty, 2) breach of duty, 3) cause and 4) harm. Gravel is Us ("Gravel") had a duty to prevent vehicles from entering into a danger zone during its dangerous explosion activities. Gravel breached its duty when its employee fell asleep allowing Plaintiff's vehicle to enter its danger zone. Had the employee performed his job under a reasonable standard of care, the Plaintiff would have been prevented from entering a danger zone thereby preventing his injury. The Plaintiff suffered harm resulting from the employee's negligence in which a foreseeable event of an explosion resulting from Gravel's activities injured him. Employers are vicariously liable,

Plan for Writing a Paper on Othello

My plan: What makes Iago carry out his evil plans to destroy Othello and Cassio's reputation? As the play begins, Othello promotes Cassio to be the lieutenant, Iago, who is hiding behind the door, has seen everything. So he asks Roderigo(who likes Desdemona) to alliance with him to get rid of Othello and Cassio. I personally think that the motivation behind it is the failure to be promoted. Throughout the play, Iago portrays racism, insecurity and a nihilistic personality too. These motivations are the reasons behind all the sinister plans. In order to examine these motivations, I plan to explore the following passages and soliloquies: (1) Who Othello, Cassio, Iago and Desdemona are at the beginning of the play. (2) What are the relationships between them. (3) How Iago gets angry and alliances with Roderigo and uses him. (4) How he plots his plans and how he plans the seed of doubt in each of them. (5) How he plays Cassio and Othello with the help of Roderigo (6) What Iago reveals in

The Negative Effects of Tanning

Each year, 28 million Americans use UV bulbs to artificially tan. The popularity of this method has lead to increased attention to the potential health effects; specifically, the risk of developing basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma. This has been debated between the National Tanning Association and Scientific Researchers. While the popularity of artificial tanning increases, significant evidence suggest that the potential harm of artificial tanning exceeds that of outdoor tanning. A necessity of any form of tanning is ultraviolet rays. One's body obtains these rays from both artificial and outdoor tanning. Ultraviolet radiation is a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths shorter than visible light which forms these rays (Skin Cancer Foundation). Ultraviolet rays also know as UV rays are invisible rays that are part of the energy that comes from the sun (Ritter). The sun produces UV which is split into three different UV sources, U
