Photographer, Diane Arbus

Patricia Bosworth's biography on Diane Arbus begins describes the start of the Russek's fur company, which was started by Diane Arbus's grandfather Frank Russek. It continues to describe her grandparent's lifestyle and the birth of her mother, Gertrude. It goes on to describe Gertrude's marriage to David Nemerov and his impact on the Russek's fur company. David went on to play a massive role in the company's growth and outreach. Diane's childhood was very different from the childhood of many others. She grew up in a wealthy family in the middle of the depression. She had many nannies and had a very close relationship with her brother, Howard and her younger sister, Renee. The book talks about Diane's years at the Fieldston School in Riverdale as well. Allan Arbus landed a job working at the Russek's fur company store, through his uncle Max Weistein, who was the president of Russeks, in the art department. According to Ben Lihtenstein, 'they fell madly in love' with one look at each othe

Decriminalization of Cannabis

"Prohibition goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes," stated Abraham Lincoln in a speech addressed to the Illinois House of Representatives. It is unlawful to prohibit the use of marijuana when there is no evident crime. For decades marijuana has been frowned upon in accordance with the country's laws, but it is still widely practiced and praised throughout the nation. The decriminalization of marijuana may prove to be advantageous to a suffering economy in various ways. The prohibition of marijuana proves to be more damaging to a nation than the actual effects are for the individuals that use it, because the prohibition of marijuana paradoxically evokes criminal activity, such as unlawful distribution and robbery. While many claim that marijuana is an addictive substance, studies show that marijuana has extremely mild if any addictive properties at all. It is erroneous fo

Story of My Family

From my father's description of him, one could conclude that he was a character. Sam was a little fellow, barely 5'5", built solidly and used to hard physical labor. He had a tremendous impact on everyone in the family and his acquaintances. For the most part he was very congenial, with an infectious laugh that usually did not require too much coaxing to start it up. On the other hand, he could, as befitting the "ginger" that he was, lose his temper very quickly, especially with my great-grandmother, or be prone not to filter his thoughts and be very blunt with people to the point of insult. From the way my father describes him; I guess he was loved by everyone in the family without any reservation. Having learned English as an adult Sam immediately set about to murder it as best he could. Speaking with a heavy Yiddish accent the Electoral College became the "Electrical" College, or a neighbor named Mr. Spadotta was known as Mr. Spaghetti. All in all, Sam was very proud of his Americ

Socialization of Orphans

"When I was a child I played by myself in a corner of the schoolyard all alone and cried out "I am an orphan"" (Packer 121). In most cases an orphan has lived a very hard and isolated life, they are rejected from the intended everlasting community of family, and it affects them for the rest of their lives. As result of the isolation and rejection that orphans tend to receive at a young age, they are unable to develop any socialization, and therefore feel unworthy of receiving acceptance from anyone. This is because "early social isolation can have profound consequences on different social behavior due to alterations in brain structures or gene expressions" (Jasmina Kercmar). From an early age, the child is on their own, and since "the most fertile time of socialization is usually the early stages of life during which the individuals develop the skills and knowledge and learn the roles necessary to function within their culture and social environment", when acceptance is given to them,

The Fight for the Right to Marry

Around the world, same-sex marriage is slowly gaining a foothold. To date, five countries including: The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Norway, and Sweden allow the marriage of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Civil unions, registered partnerships, and domestic partnerships are available with a wide range of rights in twenty other countries including regions of Australia and South America (Glass 141). But the United States lags behind many of these countries. Currently, only six states offer same-sex marriage, those being: New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, and The District of Columbia (National Conference of State Legislation). While a few other states offer civil unions or domestic partnerships, most states have constitutional amendments defining marriage as a union of one man and one woman. On the federal level, President Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act or DOMA into effect in 1996, discriminating against same-sex couples

The Avengers General

Over the past few years, Attorney Generals have filled many multimillion dollar cases against various charges. In the article The Avengers General, Alan Greenblatt explains why Attorney Generals have filed these cases, and why the Republicans Attorneys General Association (RAGA) objects to these lawsuits. There are many reasons why some Attorney Generals, mainly Democrats, choose to pursue these lawsuits against large corporations. The main reason that Attorney Generals chose to pursue these lawsuits is for the money. They are making millions and billions of dollars from these lawsuits. Attorney Generals are also pressured into these lawsuits by the corporations. Once the case is settled, they have protection in the future from other cases. In 1999, a group called Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA), composed of Republican Attorney Generals, was formed to s

Iran Awakening

The Islamic Republic has ruled the more than twenty-five hundred year old nation of Iran for the last thirty-three years. In these past three decades, support for the Islamic Republic by ordinary Iranian citizens has fluctuated back and forth and still does to this day. Specific social groups such as women, intellectuals, and students have expressed their desire for reform since this theocratic form of government came to power. These expressions for change are documented in Shirin Edabi's book Iran Awakening. After reading this personal and historical account of the Islamic Republic, one can understand the criticism of government and struggle for human rights is a tale that continues for the people of Iran. Iranian civilization has been recorded as a nation since 625 BC. Throughout Iran's history many autocratic dynasties have ruled. The Pahlavi Dynasty was the last aristocracy. In 1953, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi regained power after a coup d'etat, supported by the United S

Science As A Social Enterprise

This paper is addressing a comparison of Leslie Sage's article Writing A Clear and Engaging Paper and Madhav Ghanta's article Is the Liquid-Phase H2O2 - Based Ethylene Oxide Process More Economical and Greener Than the Gas-Phased O2 - Based Silver - Catalyzed Process?. The comparison touches on a couple of points: how Ghanta's voice affects the reader's perception and how format and structure help or hinder a paper. Ghanta's structure and voice is very stern and professional, which makes the paper feel distant and hard to connect to. Whereas Sage's article is in laymen's terms, but still holds its professionalism, allowing a connection to be made between the writing and the reader, but still remember they are reading a scientific paper. IMRAD format is as follows: intro, method, results, and discussion, but Ghanta's article takes a slightly different approach. He has an introduction of the processes he is discussin

Women in Islam

Islam is a particularly hot topic in the world we live in today, however, our society has a false conception about the religion. Most of the misconceptions are regarding the rights of Muslim women. Our society has the idea that Muslim women are weak, denigrated, demeaned, neglected, and subjugated. If one took the time to research the religion before making an opinion of it, we could avoid these misunderstandings. Contrary to popular belief, Islam regards women as equal to men in many aspects of daily life and women have a unique place in Islam. For me, it was easier to understand their "place" in Islam by comparing it to the caste system of Hinduism. "And women shall have rights similar to the rights against them according to what is equitable; but men have a degree (of advantage) over them." (Qur"an 28:229). To better understand the place of women in Islam, one must have a basic understanding of the faith itself. The five pillars are the framework of Muslim life. The pillars are c

Psychology - Eating Disorders

Eating disorders have taken over many young adolescents lives, mostly young girls and younger women. Western cultures food is abundant and the eating disorder rates are thriving. Large amounts of people are obese, and many suffering from binge eating. On the contrary, many adolescents suffer from anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The following essay researches the importance of sociocultural and environmental influences, as to whether such contributions are the most significant or go hand in hand with biological factors in the development of eating disorders. Causation factors are also researched on society's everyday norm of dieting and over-consumption of readily available food. To analyze and understand the significance of each factor and possible correlations, research in scholarly literature as well as documentaries have been acknowledged. Needless to say, researchers have concluded that it is rather difficult to periodically perform studies on groups suffering from eating di

Goal Structures and Cooperative Learning

Cooperative learning is an umbrella term for a group of teaching and learning strategies characterized by goal structures in which individuals must work together to succeed (McInerney & McInenery, 2010, p. 268). It has been proposed as a means of developing social skills, increasing higher order thinking, and as a means of improving race relations and empathy (Petty, 2009, pp. 143-144; Muijs & Reynolds, 2005, p. 57). It is, understandably, a much-loved and thoroughly researched teaching strategy, but it is not without its disadvantages. However, these disadvantages are often overlooked in research, and not firmly cemented in the collective consciousness of educational theorists and practitioners. This is unfortunate, as it is only by understanding the disadvantages of cooperative learning that its strategies can be used to full potential. In this essay, we will describe cooperative learning and some of its forms, as well as its advantages and disadvantages. Cooperative learning must

According to Cambridge dictionary the definition of corruption is "illegal, bad or dishonest behavior, especially by people in positions of power". Moroccan citizen are facing this bad behavior every day and it is a real problem for Moroccans and their government as well. The Tea Set and Victorian Britain

The purpose of this short essay is to examine the importance of the tea set on Victorian Britain, whilst identifying what made it such a revolutionary part of British culture. Special attention will be attributed towards the working class throughout the industrial period. It will look at how a change in ideals came about and who was to benefit, the idea of social emulation will be touched on lightly, although this is not the main focus. Historians are fascinated with the transformation of the working class during this period. The essay will look at the works of P.Johnson[1] in contrast to Pat Hudson[2] , to engage with historical debate focusing around what prompted the shift in the widespread acceptance of tea by the working class. A short audio clip will also be used to draw some key points too the debate as well[3]. The first section of this essay will focus on where the pivotal shift in changing tea consumption came from, while the second will look at whether there was a desire in the working class to emulate the upper classes of society through the porcelain set.

Recession First

The year is 1929. The country is full of life and power. The economy is booming. The "Roaring Twenties- were just that, roaring and alive. The United States was on top of the world as a society, a nation, and most importantly, as an economy. Then it all came to a screeching halt on one fateful Tuesday. A normal Tuesday by any accounts, yet it would turn out to be one of the most infamous Tuesdays known to history. This, of course, was Black Tuesday. On October 29, 1929 the United States stock market crashed and rocked the country's economy so violently that it didn't start to recover until 1933. This shock reverberated throughout the world. When all was said and done, it is safe to say that almost no one emerged unscathed. It was a time in history where many suffered, many starved, and many were left out in the streets without employment or income. Skip forward almost a century. It is now the year 2006. The country is full of life and power. The economy is booming. Nothing could go

Genderless Child Ignites Controversy

Can people live in the world free of gender biases? Is it possible or impossible? "Storm of Controversy," an article by Leanne Italie published in the New York associated press in 2011, told a story about a couple, Witterick and Stocker-"s decision to raise their child genderless, which ignites a firestorm of responses. They think that the world is boxed into outdated traditions and ideas, and their child should be free from all them. The parents believe that it is their child's fate to create his/her own ideas, thoughts as well as select his/her own path in the near future. In my opinion, even though their plan/decision is based on good intention, the way they impose/implement it is misguided or can be labeled as" political awareness gone awry,"(Italie 2011) First of all, this seem to be some sort of social experiment, where they are using their child to send a message to the world; therefore, it can negatively affect the child's mental and emotional development. The child is not a

Fly Away Peter and All Quite on the Western Front

David Malouf, author of the novella 'Fly Away Peter', and director of the 1930 film 'All Quiet On the Western Front', Lewis Milestone, both demonstrate their ability to communicate the presence of hope and courage in their texts via technique. One being written, the other visual, their protagonists both portray the generation of young men who were lost to World War I, never realizing their potential. They present the theme of courage as instances of self-sacrifice and upholding of personal beliefs, even though they are ultimately damaging and pushed unto these characters. Providing a reason to survive, the theme of hope exists as the ability to be inspired by physical symbols or experiences of contentment to believe that peace may exist in war's demise. The texts similarly use characterization and naturalistic metaphorical devices but differ in their use of writer and directorial style. Even so, the authors consistently convey the notion that even in the most horrid scenes of war, som

Families Living Under The Poverty Line

As I read the lesson this week on social class, which according to Weber is a large group of people who rank closely to one another in terms of property, prestige, and power, I read that the poverty line for a family of four in America is about $22,000. So I will be basing my poverty level family budget on that number. I learned that there are seven basic items that construct a budget. Those items are rent and utilities, food, child care for children from about age 4 to age 8, transportation (owning and operating a vehicle) , health care, taxes, and other necessities, these necessities include clothing, supply and personal care. Family budgets represent the amount of money a family needs to manage at a basic level. These budgets are not based on what families actually spend, but rather on the realistic costs of the seven basic items that constitute the budgets. (Sylvia A. Allegretto) Some of the budget costs I plan on basing on personal experience and research and also I will be doing a monthly budget. For rent and utilities I estimate about $850, and then we have food for a fam

Andrew Jackson and Democracy

Throughout the formation of our current political system, the expectations of the American people towards their representatives have undergone a drastic change between the time of our founding and the election of the seventh president of the United States, Andrew Jackson in 1828. James Madison had previously published twenty-six out of the eighty-five Federalist Papers in 1787-1788, the two most influential Federalist Papers regarding the issues of factions and tyranny were Federalist Papers 10 and 51. Madison was preoccupied with finding the balance between ensuring our leaders did not have the capability to tyrannize the citizens while at the same time maintaining our leaders ability to perform their duties. Madison's fear of the omnipotent, oppressive government was later shared by Andrew Jackson, who began to advocate for a movement of the American political society toward a more pure democratic process of elections after the 1824 presidential election. Jackson desired to see the i

Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis

Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis is broken into three different sections; each bring about a change in the story and expand the setting from Gregor's room to the outside world. With each change of setting comes a change in the characters within the story. Gregor changes from a man who thinks of nothing but his family and money problems, into someone who is concerned with his own problems. Gregor's sister goes from a loving and caring person to someone that feels totally betrayed by his transformation. Gregor's father is someone who seems to be harsh on Gregor and, with his transformation and the change of acts, only gets more harsh towards Gregor. Gregor's mother is the only person who remains fairly constant through the story. She has love for Gregor as her son and even after the metamorphosis, she still has this sense of this creature being her son even though she is disgusted by his looks. In Act I of this story Gregor awakes to find himself transformed. "Gregor's eyes turned next

American and Vietnamese Culture

Leaving my hometown, my country and my family to live a new live and start new a career in the America. Arrived in New York International Airport, I was a little bit shocked because the airport was extremely huge. I could not even see the ending. It was full of people from all over the world. It was the second time in my life I heard everyone speak in different languages. The first time was when I arrived in Hong Kong Airport. I temporary lost my mind until someone bumped into me and he fell down instead of me. Then instead of yelling at me, he stood up and said "I"m sorry", although it was obviously my fault because I looked at the ceiling while I was walking. It was one of the impressions when I came to the U.S. I was quite impressed by the life style, the people, and the culture in America. I took a small plane and flew to Virginia Beach. After getting my luggage, my aunt and her daughters went to pick me up and we drove back to my aunt's house. I couldn't sleep in the first night

The Story of an Hour

The Story of an Hour takes its readers into the life of Louise Mallard a housewife who seems to be liberated upon the supposed death of her husband Brently. One would ask why she would have such feelings, when she was just told that her husband was dead. I believe one would have to explore the era to which the story is betrayed, to understand as to why Louise felt this way. The oppression of women during this time had a lot to do with the erratic mixture of feelings that were racing through her mind. "Free! Body and soul free!" (Chopin 247). The chains that bound her to a seemingly depressed marriage were broken if only for a sweet hour of freedom. Kate Chopin's stories were written of the reality women faced during her lifetime. Unfortunately for women they would have to endure such inequalities for years to come. Chopin first published The Story of an Hour in 1894, under the title The Dream of an Hour, which seems to be a perfect fit to the morale of the story. It was the dream

Protecting Participants of Research Trials

I have allowed my children to be part of research trials in the past and I never knew so much work was involved in protecting the subjects. My eighteen year old daughter has colitis and her doctor has requested that she take part in a few studies over the years. He was always very thorough and went over the paperwork in great detail. I remember countless times saying to him, I trust you, I will sign, for him to say no I have to go over every part of this with you. I now understand why he was always so thorough and why he went over every single part. The informed consent part for me was a given. You need to tell the risks involved and make sure they are understood. Even though my daughter was already having a procedure done and having biopsies, the doctor made sure he explained the risk of adding on the extra biopsies needed for the research study.A few times the studies only involved a bl

Accepting Artistic Appropriation

Copyright laws have been around since the 18th century, establishing whose original ideas are whose, and haven hardly changed since. Without laws of copyright infringement, the creative world would be in chaos. But when really thinking about how these laws shape artistic appropriation, there isn't much of a noticeable impact. A lot of the new ideas in today's society are merely innovations of old ideas. One example of this innovation is from the music industry, a case that involves one band, Negativland, using samples from the extremely well known band U2. "I Still Haven't Found What I"m Looking For" was U2's song that Negativland sampled off of. Because of Negativland's failure to ask permission before using that song, U2's record company sued. Countless cases end up like this one, but so many more are being overlooked. Sampling music has spread worldwide and is now widely available over the Internet. This sharing process allows people to hear a song, liking it or not, and lets them
