The Power of the Cross

Who would have thought one tiny gesture so many years ago would lead me to where I am today? On a cold night in October 1988 I received something so special, it would change the direction of my life. That was the night I received a cross. If not for that little gift, my life would be drastically different and I would not be the same person I am today. I was a young soldier fresh out of basic training stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany. That is where I met the man I would soon marry. In the beginning, we had so much fun together going out. I remember going on picnic's to the river in the little green Audi we had, it was so funny, and if you put a green M&M on it you could not tell where it was because the color matched so perfectly. Those were the good times when we were dating; just enjoying each other's company. Then we got married and had our son. Wow, did things change. Here I was: a new mother, soldier and wife but, try as I might, it seemed that I could do nothing right. I could

Euthyphro's Definition of Piety

What does piety really mean? Is there a universal definition of piety? How can we say if a person is pious or impious? Do we have a certain standard to determine what is pious or not? In Plato's dialogue the Euthyphro, Socrates argues against all the definition of piety Euthyphro gave him. In Euthyphro's initial dialogues with Socrates he is in the process of prosecuting his father for the murder of a murderer. Socrates did not understand the philosophy behind Euthyphro's actions and he wants to understand what piety means. On the other hand, Socrates is facing a trial himself and wanted to be able to understand the same respect that Euthyphro already achieved. Euthyphro claims that he fully understands the divine law of piety and impiety. In the dialogues, he offers distinct definition of piety. [1] Prosecute the wrong doer no matter who it is, what crime it is, not to prosecute is impious (Euthyphro, 6e). [2] What is dear to the god is pious, what is impious (Euthyphro, 7a). [3] The

Factory Farming and Cruelity to Animals

Factory farming has produced large amounts of food at low-cost. In 1970 the top five beef packers controlled 25% of the market, today the top four controls more than 80%. Industries have change, there are fewer people controlling the meat industries. It is not like when the farmers had small tractors and old fashion methods, where they can no longer compete with the practice of factory farming. Small family farms now have almost become obsolete. Small family farms would allow cattle to graze the grassland. Farms produce too much toxic waste, which pollutes watercourses. And the overuse of antibiotics has resulted in the growth of germs. Factory farming is essentially farming Industrialized. The operation can produce food in high volume; they are not worried about the environment, animal welfare, or food safety. Most factory farms have animals living in horrifying conditions, and are restrained in dark over crowded buildings. Chickens sometimes ten at a time are crammed in cage

Racism Today

Racism has set a huge impact on our  today. People are treated differently because of their color skin or their looks in general. Not only has there been racism with Americans and African Americans but with other nationalities also. There are many stereotypical people that think because you are of a certain descend, you are just like the rest. In the movie "Crash" there was a problem with white cops and a black couple, a Mexican with a middle eastern man and Asians also. Racism can happen with anyone around you and you may never know who is and who isn't.      Two males of black descend stole a truck when they were on their way home. How ironic that when the two men were walking, they had a conversation about people thinking just because they are black they are just like the rest. A thief can be anyone of an

Holden Caulfield in Catcher in the Rye

Holden Caulfield is a troubled teenager trying to find his place in life and suffering, making the transition from childhood to adulthood. Holden's appearance is what a usual teenager looks like around his age, but a bit more mature in some features. He says he has a crew cut in chapter one "I wear a crew cut quite frequently and I never have to comb it much." (J.D. Salinger 9) The next features describe a more mature teenager as he says that he is around six feet two inches which is pretty tall for a teen and that he is graying on one side of his head. "It's really ironical, because I'm six foot two and a half and I have gray hair. I really do. The one side of my head--the right side--is full of millions of gray hairs." (J.D. Salinger 13) Holden also does say he is quiet skinny in chapter 15 and he has 2 bad habits which are smoking and drinking. "Then I tested to see if my breath stank from so many cigarettes and the Scotch and sodas I drank at Ernie's."(J.D. Salinger 120) Holden's Intellectual aspect is very poor I don't think he's able to grasp reality and not only his actions but his in

Chris McCandless and Into the Wild

As a nave reader, one may be forced or compelled to side with the wits and the persuasion of Jon Krakauer's analysis of Chris McCandless. Through a surface level reading of Into the Wild one can be enticed by Krakauer's idea that Chris became a rebel due to the brash demeanor and inequitable expectations Walt, Chris' father, laid upon him. Krakauer leads the reader to believe that through his actions and each rule he set for Chris, Walt embedded the recalcitrant behavior into his son that was portrayed through Chris running away and entering "the wild-. However, contrary to Krakauer's surface level message, a more in-depth reading would reveal that Chris' intentions were never to rebel, in fact he had respect for authority as he showed all throughout his early years. He was truly more concerned with pleasing the ones he loved, learning from their mistakes and succeeding in the eyes of others. Chris' ultimate fear was failure. In the beginning of the novel Krakauer introduces us to

Reconstruction after the Civil War

Reconstruction was the time period after the Civil War. It was a plan to "reconstruct" the South; hence its name, and join the Union while giving African Americans more freedom. Though the idea theoretically was a good plan, it had variables act upon it that were not completely expected. Because of this, Reconstruction ended in 1877 and was said to be a failed attempt. The ending of Reconstruction left white governments in power in the South. Both have their contributions to the failure of this historical Era. The North mostly caused the end of the Reconstruction, but both North and South made mistakes eventually leading to the end of Reconstruction, twelve years after the end of the Civil War. The blame of the unsuccessful plan could not be placed completely on one side. The South had its own way of leading Reconstruction down the road not meant to be traveled. Every step that the North tried to move on during this time period, the South resisted in many ways, setting them b

Solomon Northup, Increasing Production of Cotton

Solomon Northup, a free black man from New York, was stripped of his freedom in 1841 and sold to Louisiana, where he spent the majority of his time working for Edwin Epps on Bayou Boeuf. Epps" main product was cotton. Going into the nineteenth century cotton came to the forefront of the American economy, making the economy a success, and revolutionizing slavery in the United States. Solomon Northup's experiences on Bayou Boeuf are a good representation of how the increasing production of cotton in the United States resulted in the mass movement of slaves, and the emergence of a new kind of slave labor, one in which was even more labor intensive than previous slave labor in North America. As cotton production came to the forefront of the American economy it became essential for the owners of the cotton plantations to obtain labor, which they found in the form of slaves from older slave regions, creating the movement of slaves being sold South, a movement in which Northup represents

Plan of Action for Zara Stores

Zara offers competitive advantages over its competition by:
• Offering new styles throughout the year rather than just the standard times of spring/summer and winter/fall. Zara introduces roughly 11,000 new styles throughout the year compared to the competitors who average 2,000 - 4,000 items.
• Creating customer demand for product by ever changing store inventory and having fast turnovers, this creates a sense of urgency for the customer. If they do not buy it now they may not have another chance. Zara stores turnover 75% every three to four weeks.
• Empowering store managers who are the ones most suitable to react to changing trends. The corporate structure gives great power to the managers in allowing them to choose which items go on sale, and when as well as specifically ordering items that they determine to be large movers.
• La Caruno store operates as a trial store to trends. The commercials are able to unroll new designs and trends and test them as a form of live, real time market research. From these findings they are able to adjus

Dublin Internship Program Opportunity

Lately I have been thinking in depth about bringing a purpose into my life. I have been thinking about my own interests, passions, and goals, and trying to find a way that I can satisfy all of these things. I've been studying international affairs for the past three semesters at the University of Colorado at Boulder. I've learned a great deal and feel fortunate to be apart of the amazing community there, but lately I've felt as if it is not the path I need to be on if I am going to ultimately be happy with my works and career later on. Roughly a month ago I came into contact with Dr. Gunter Seefeldt. I was educated on the ICE program through a friend who had participated in a similar program. I did not hesitate to call after researching all of the programs ICE offered students looking to travel. I thought this would be an excellent program to further not only a formal education but a world education. Little did I know Dr. Seefeldt would offer me even more than I had expected.

Federal Funds for a Stem Cell Research

The issue of federal funding for embryonic stem cell research is both an emotional and ethical disagreement between the advancement of science and the value of human life. People who support this controversial research think that despite an immoral and unethical side of it, the possible benefits are more important. Opponents of human embryonic stem cell research state that in a decent human society moral and ethical value should put limitations on scientific research: do no harm to human life. The science by itself is the method to get knowledge; Gene Tarne and David Prentice note "it can determine that one way may be more effective or more efficient than another. But efficient does not mean morally acceptable"(5). The government should not provide taxpayer funding for this research. The three reasons are: the Dickey-Wicker Amendment, there is no proof of a real successful cure found, and a danger to patients receiving stem cell therapy. The first reason why embryonic stem c

Harmony and Pythagora's Numbers

Nature draws energy into herself - sunshine into leaves, nutrition from the soil into plants, and so on. Even the way fish move through water corresponds to this opposite way of using energy. Schauberger showed that the swiftness of a fish and the ease of this action depends upon yet more spiraling vortices of water, this time tiny ones, created in the wake of each scale on the fish's body. These are what make it possible for a fish to hold its position with little effort, even against the force of a fast-flowing stream. Schauberger put it rather beautifully: 'The fish does not swim in the river, the river swims the fish.' Harmony (Kindle Location 1665) The above quote is expressed by the Austrian philosopher, Viktor Schauberger, in Prince Charles's book, Harmony. This expression is more than a metaphor. The river, ocean or lake swims us too. It is an example of our ebb and flow i

The Last Supper: Tintoretto and Da Vinci

Tintoretto's The Last Supper done on canvas was created 100 years after Leonardo Da Vinci's The Last Supper fresco; sometime between 1592 and 1594. Tintoretto created this painting in the 16th century, during the Catholic Church Counter-Reformation in Northern Europe. Because of the time it was created (1495-1497), it exhibits styles encouraged by the Church such as appealing to the emotions by exaggerating and dramatizing the subject in the artwork. Da Vinci's work was created during the Italian Renaissance, which is when linear perspective was introduced - as shown in the work - to create space and depth. Both works are about the same important event in Christian history, when Jesus was having the Passover meal with his disciples before Christ was brought to trial and crucified. Although it's about the same general subject, there are several contrasts between the two in regards to form, content, styles, and subject matter. Both artists illus

Advertising and Children

Children are a large part of how companies make their money and will be for a long time. Currently, television commercials are filled with advertisements and clever ideas to influence children. As crazy as it sounds, today parents are overtaken by their kid's ability to beg for toys and other commodities. Children take up a large amount of their parent's financial budget because they want everything that interests them from what they see in commercials. It is amazing to see how easily a child can manipulate their parent to spend money for them. Advertising is clever in the way it draws children in, but it also brainwashes kid's minds. Advertising can expose children to so many different products. In the documentary "Consuming Kids", children get sucked into a world of entertainment, but for the long run the purpose is to help the companies make money. When the family decides on the computer or car boug

All the high ranking offices were held by people who were

Early Years of Abraham Lincoln

This paper will discuss Abraham Lincoln's early years as a child. It will cover Abraham's family members, friends, and acquaintances. The life of a child on a farm in the early frontier days will be explained as well. The times spent in Hodgenville, Kentucky, Little Pigeon Creek in Southern Indiana, and later in Illinois. The death of Abraham Lincoln's Mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. The marriage of Thomas Lincoln to Sarah Bush Johnston will also be discussed in this essay. I will take a look at Abraham Lincoln's relationship with his Father, Thomas Lincoln. Also how Abraham Lincoln was able to receive certain parts of his education from Teachers, and how he taught himself the rest. When all of the above information is collected and recorded into this essay, there will be a clearer understanding of Abraham Lincoln's early years. "Abraham Lincoln was born in a one room log cabin, on the Sinking Springs Farm, near Hodgenville, Kentucky on February 12, 1809. To the proud parents of Thomas

The Meaning of Love

A very popular question that many people think of and wonder is, what is the meaning of love or what is Love? Love to some people is buying things to make a person happy. Love can also be confused with how you treat or act around someone. But those ways of looking at love in my mind are not complete. Love can be shown to people, animals, or even objects. Love to me is putting someone else's happiness first no matter what because of your unconditional care for them and not expecting anything in return. There are many false perceptions of love; for example there are people who think that objects are a good way to show someone that you care for them. But this confused a lot because people will try to make someone happy just for themselves. This may sound confusing but it actually is not. By stating this I mean that they just want the personal satisfaction of making another person happy. I have learned that you cannot earn love from buying things for people it just does not work tha

Loved to Death: Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily"

Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily- is a short story about Emily Grierson, a woman stuck in the past and working to overcome what she thought were the biggest struggles of her life. Grierson's inability to deal with life and the issues that come along with it cause her to completely cut off the outside world, lead a private life and keep to herself in the home of her deceased father. Because so many of the townspeople had complaints about Emily, her home, and her lifestyle, it caused many problems to arise for her throughout the story. Although much of the community never thought Emily was "crazy-, it was quite obvious that she was very troubled and suffering from some sort of mental disability or disorder.  Because of the circumstances she faced in her life, she had problems letting go of the things that she was scared to be without.                       Faulkner introduces the reader to the first of many issues that plague Emily in the begi

Why We Choose the Foods We Do

There are many factors that influence a person's food selection. These factors include: economic, social, psychological, and physiological considerations. Physiological factors affect the body's need and desire for food. Hunger can be defined as the feeling of emptiness, weakness or pain caused by lack of food. It becomes more intense as time passes, until we are unable to think of something else other than food. Take Phil, for example. Phil works long hours, and his job is hectic. He is adopting irregular eating patterns and is probably snacking instead of eating proper meals throughout the day, which could cause him to become hungrier between meals. Appetite, on the other hand, is the desire for food even when the body is not hungry. Appetite can be triggered by sight, aroma and the mention of food. Phil has a very strong appetite and eats food even though he is not hungry. He is triggered to eat more food by the smell and sight of the food, and he struggles to control his u

How a Television Ad Uses Rhetoric

There is a great deal to be learned about rhetoric by reading an article called, "Rhetorical Situations and Their Constituents," by Keith Grant-Davie. Rhetoric is a way to persuade someone through speaking or writing. The article, "Rhetorical Situations and Their Constituents" shows how the use of tone and style (ethos), emotional or motivational appeals (pathos), and logic to support a claim (logos) are used by rhetors, people who make up rhetorical situations to convince an audience. "In order to understand rhetoric, it is necessary to understand the motivations (Grant-Davie 101)". Grant-Davie's article inspired me to investigate rhetoric in use on my own. I decided to choose a commercial about "Axe: Excite," a product from a top-selling men's bath and body hygiene line. Doesn't every man dream something along the lines of having beautiful angels fall from heaven with whom he can have sexual encounters? The commercial of my choice is one minute long and starts off with a man s

Nursing Home Negligence

Nursing home neglect and abuse is a worldwide, growing problem. Elders enter nursing homes when they need extra attention, or medical assistance. Whatever the reasoning is for entering these facilities, the job of the staff is always the same. When they are on the clock, they are supposed to make sure that the patients are one hundred percent comfortable, physically, mentally, and medically. That entails feeding patients on time, giving them the right medicine at the right time, making sure they are clean, and simply making their stay as comfortable and painless as possible. Working in a nursing home isn't a job to be taken lightly, and to accept this job position requires taking on big responsibilities. To many times people in these homes are treated poorly. Whether it is negligence, or abuse, often patients are treated in ways that are unfair, cruel, and on top of everything, illegal. Anyone old enough to sign working papers and get a job should have a sense of responsibility; how

Gun Ownership In America

Introduction There are thousands of reported senseless killings every year, many of them stemming from domestic gun violence inside and often reaching outside of the home. Many victims of these shootings involve innocent men, women and children and the victims of suicide who are fatally shot or injured-- accidentally or otherwise--each day by a gun that is associated with or that can be traced back to the home of the perpetrator, criminal or victim. The very instrument that is designed to be there to protect is now the source of unforeseen violence and tragedy, which can now be used against them either by a criminal, friend, associate or an emotionally disturbed or unstable loved one, who has gained easy access to guns and ammunition. Much too often, senseless, unspeakable shootings or killings like these grace our headlines every day, which mentions a child accidentally shooting, killing or injuring, his older or younger sibling, while playing with a loaded gun. The Redwoods

I assume that most of us have heard of the redwoods. The redwoods seemed to be a mystery to me until I saw them last year. Whenever someone mentions the redwoods, the very first thing pops into my mind is a tree with red leaves and red bark. Indeed, most kinds of redwoods are ever green. The redwoods are well known for their magnificent beauty , their longevity and resilience. According to an online article "10 Most Magnificent Trees in the World", the redwood tree is one of them. There are a lot of statistics showed the magnificence of redwood trees. For example, in 2006, researcher Chris Atkins and amateur naturalist Michael Taylor measured a coast redwood tree in the Redwood National Park which is over 379 feet tall and up to 26 feet across; it is confirmed as the tallest living thing on earth. Then there is another genus of redwoods -- giant sequoias, "the world's most massive tree" (qtd.in "Save the Redwood" 2). A giant sequoia tree named General Sherman which is located at Sequoia National Park, "it contains about 52,500 cu
