Rutgers Trial Takes Turn After Witness Admits He Lied to Police

The Rutgers University hate crime trial took a drastic turn after one witness, Lokesh Ojha, admitted that he lied on the stand and revealed that the defendant, Dharun Ravi, intentionally set a webcam to spy on his gay roommate Tyler Clementi. When Clementi found out a few days later, he committed suicide by jumping off a bridge, prompting national media to use the case as an example of anti-gay bullying. Ravi now faces charges of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation, witness tampering, and hindering arrest (Koenigs). During the cross-examination, Ojha admitted that Ravi told him about the webcam prior to the taping of Clementi's date with another man on September 21, 2010 and even encouraged him to watch. Ojha's testimony helped seal the prosecution's claims that Ravi's

9/11 Victims

A Pentagon report released on Tuesday, February 28th, revealed that some unidentified body part remains from the September 11th crash of Flight 93 in Shanksville, PA may have come under the corrupt hands of the mortuary at Dover Air Force Base. According to the report, the remains "could not be tested or identified" because they were either too small or irreparably damaged (The Washington Post). Dover has been under review since November after multiple investigations turned up missing body parts, a mutilated corpse, fraud, and other allegations (Whitlock).

Obama Revives

Just days after his healthcare reforms were halted in Congress, President Barack Obama is calling on Congress to pass his "Buffett Rule," his plan to increase taxes on millionaires. Obama originally proposed his plan last September, but he faced great opposition from House Republicans. His plan still stands little hope of passing, but the Obama administration plans for his proposal to show him as a champion of economic fairness in light of the upcoming April tax filing deadline and as the presidential elections near. The Republicans have already denounced the plan as a political stunt (Kuhnhenn). Under the "Buffett Rule," people earning at least $1 million annually, whether through salary or investments, would be required to pay at least 30 percent of their income i

Suu Kyi Wins Monumental Victory and Seat in Burmese Parliament

According to Aung San Suu Kyi's party, she has won a seat in parliament in Burma's historic elections, setting her up to hold public office in the next few years. Previously, Myanmar was ruled exclusively by the military, but the Southeastern Asian country is now hoping to gain legitimacy with the EU as well as have Western sanctions lifted. The National League for Democracy celebrated the monumental move that could end with a democratic government in Burma in the near future. After decades of a struggling economy, Myanmar is attempting to turn democratic in hopes of emerging from international isolation (CBC News). The United States showed their support for Myanmar at a news conference in Istanbul. "Even the most repressive regimes can reform, and even the most closed societi

Supreme Court Rules Strip-Searches Allowed for Any Arrest

In a 5-to-4 vote, the Supreme Court ruled that officials have the option to strip-search the people they arrest before admitting them to a jail regardless of the original offense or whether it is reasonable to suspect that they are carrying contraband. The two sides seemingly disagree on the interpretation of the Fourth Amendment. The decision, which is opposed by many states and federal policies, has created a great controversy. However, the Supreme Court maintains that while it allows for strip-searches for everyone who is arrested, it does not require them. Instead, the Supreme Court determined that the Fourth Amendment's prohibition of unreasonable searches does not forbid them (Liptak). "Every detainee who will be admitted to the general population may be required to undergo a close visual inspection while undressed," announced Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, who is commonly the swing vote in these decisions, but chose to side with the conservative wing on this decision. Accordi

FDA Fails to Ban BPA from Food Packaging

After extensive research, the US Food and Drug Administration has declined to ban the use of bisphenol A, commonly known as BPA, in food packaging, despite scientific evidence of its ill effects highlighted by the Natural Resources Defense Council's 2008 petition. However, the FDA denounced the study citing that it "was not sufficient to persuade" partly because it did not specify how people would ingest the chemical and the sample sizes were not sufficient. The FDA did announce its intentions to continue to research the health effects caused by BPA (Boxall). "The FDA has carefully reviewed your citizen petition and has determined that it failed to provide sufficient data and information to persuade the FDA to initiate rulemaking," said the agency's letter in response to the petition. "The FDA is denying your citizen petition in its entirety" (The Huffington Post). "This is not a final safety determination on BPA," said Douglas Karas, the FDA spokesman. "There is a commitment

Mali Rebel Leader Faces Economic Sanctions

Heeding to the threats of crippling sanctions, junior officer Captain Amadou Haya Sanogo agreed to hold a national convention to decide on a transitional government that would ultimately reinstate the democratic government that previously reigned. Sanogo overthrew Mali's former democratic leader, President Amadou Toumani Toure, and sent him into hiding. President Toure had planned on resigning after the next scheduled presidential election at the end of April (New York Times). The rebels are fighting for a homeland for the nomadic Tuareg people. On March 21st, a mutiny took over the Kati military camp. Captain Sanogo quickly became the leader and led the troops to the presidential palace. Additional rebel troops took advantage of the rioting in the capital and quickl

Obama's Health Care Mandate Still Questioned by Congress

Plans for President Barack Obama's health care overhaul plan still remain up in the air following a three-day discussion in the Supreme Court. Justices left the argument questioning whether the plan could stay intact if the key mandate regarding individual insurance requirement was voted against. The great controversy with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act lies with this mandate. Twenty-six states do not want the entire overhaul to pass muster, while other justices agree with certain parts of the plan. The final vote will take place in June (ABC Local 7). The individual mandate requires all Americans to buy health care or pay a fine. Obama's reason for including this mandate is because it bans insurers from discriminating against the unhealthy through inflated premiums or denying coverage altogether. Insurers need more people to buy insurance or they will have to raise premiums. Millions of Americans currently do not have health insurance, and they simply pass on the cost to the government, businesses, and other Americans with insurance when they suffer from catastrophic medical problems (Heath). Justice Anthony Kennedy, oftentimes the cr

JetBlue Pilot Clayton Osbon Has Psychotic Meltdown Mid-Flight

An affidavit has drawn supporting an arrest warrant for JetBlue pilot Clayton Osbon, who has been charged with interfering with the flight crew after suffering from a psychotic meltdown during a flight to Los Angeles. According to flight passengers and crew members, Osbon exhibited erratic behavior during the flight, which eventually escalated and forced passengers to restrain him until the plane completed an emergency landing in Texas. Osbon's license is currently suspended while this case undergoes investigation and he receives medical treatment. If found guilty, Osbon faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine (CNN). The two-page affidavit, detailed by FBI Special Agent John Whitworth, reported that Osbon missed the crew briefing prior to the flight, but he did not show any bizarre behavior before takeoff. However, after the plane lifted off the ground, Osbon "said something to the FO (first officer) about being evaluated by someone," recorded the affidavit, but the f

Obama Faces Backlash for Birth Control Policies

Despite the consequences his re-election campaign may experience from his decision, President Obama refuses to concede on his new policy that requires health insurance companies to cover birth control. Under the new policy, health insurance is required to include birth control and preventative measures for women. Catholic bishops claim that this policy does not allow for religious liberty because the church does not condone birth control (Heavey). Since his public announcement of the policy, the Obama administration has received great backlash from Catholic universities, hospitals, and other church-affiliated programs. However, according to David Axelrod, a senior campaign adviser for the president, Obama is willing to work with these affiliations "to see if the implementation of the policy can be done in a way that allays some of those concerns." The Obama admini

US Advisers Killed After Soldiers Burn Koran

Tensions rose between the US and Afghanistan last week after a pile of Korans were incinerated in Afghanistan last week. Five US service members were discovered to be the culprits, although officials claim that the burning was accidental. The Korans were removed earlier from a prison air base after US troops found extremist messages written inside and stored in an office. They were later discarded as trash later on and taken to a landfill. While the Muslim holy books were being burned, Afghans recognized the Korans, prompting the week of protests and attacks. Thirty Afghans lost their lives in the struggle, and six US military personnel were also killed (Sieff). US military officials immediately investigated the situation, partly in hopes to quell the rising tensions by showing that they are ap

Obama Defends His Energy Policy Despite Rising Gas Prices

At a crucial point in the presidential race, President Barack Obama defended his energy policies but offered no reprieve from the climbing gas prices. As is the norm, gas prices slowly creep up with summer just around the corner, but this year they began even earlier in the year. In fact, gas prices are a staggering 25 cents per gallon above the norm for this time of year. President Obama's gas policies strive to wean America off of imported oil, which makes up the large majority of the gasoline consumed in our nation. Aside from the normal trend of increasing prices this time of year, the unusual skyrocketing rates can be attributed to the tensions in the Middle East, where Iran threatened to retaliate against the West following their sanctions over its nuclear program (Landler).

Hanjuan Jin Found Guilty of Stealing Trade Secrets

Hanjuan Jin was found guilty of stealing trade secrets from her former company, Motorola Inc., but was acquitted of charges of economic espionage for China. Jin illegally downloaded 1,000 of the company's proprietary documents, which included important business secrets before trying to board a plane to Beijing. Federal agents found the files on her computer and other electronic devices during a random security search at the airport (Kelleher). Jin simultaneously worked for Motorola as well as a Beijing-based company called Kai Sun News Technology Co., or SunKaisens, which is affiliated with the Chinese military (Harris).

Volkman Faces 4 Life Sentences for Illegal Drug Distribution

Dr. Paul Volkman, a Chicago doctor, was sentenced to four life terms for the overdose deaths of four of his patients. In a medical world that relies more heavily on medication every day, Volkman wrote more prescriptions for oxycodone from 2003 to 2005 than any other doctor in the country, resulting in the deaths of several of his patients. In addition to the life terms, he also received jail time ranging from 10 to 20 years on 13 other criminal accounts, including possession of a weapon during a drug trafficking scandal. He was also convicted of eight other distribution counts that eventually killed his patients, but there simply wasn't enough evidence to prove it (CBS News).

Former Lacrosse Player Huguely Goes on Trial for Death of Girlfriend Love

The trial of former University of Virginia lacrosse player, George Huguely V, for allegedly murdering his on-again off-again girlfriend, Yeardley Love, began last week and has largely centered around the incriminating emails Huguely sent to Love before the incident stating, "I should have killed you." Huguely faces first-degree murder and five other charges if he is found guilty of killing Love (FOX News). Huguely entered Love's apartment in May of 2010, where he alleged bashed Love's head against the wall until she passed out and eventually died. The defense claims that Love's death resulted from cardiopulmonary failure after taking prescription Adderall and consuming alcohol.

Romney Targets Gingrich After Losing South Carolina Primary

Following the South Carolina primary, the Republican contest has largely become a three-man race, although historically the candidate is essentially decided by the Florida debates. With Rick Santorum taking Iowa and Gingrich taking South Carolina, Mitt Romney aggressively bashed Gingrich in the most recent debate in an effort to stay afloat. Romney sought to highlight Gingrich as an unethical politician with a questionable history plagued by an ethics investigation in the 1990s and his involvement with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (Reston).

Roe v. Wade Celebrates 39th Anniversary

On Sunday, January 22nd, the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade in which the Supreme Court legalized abortion nationwide, hundreds of anti-abortion activists gathered in the nation's capital. March for Life, a nonprofit group, organized an hour and a half long program that included speakers, music, and a march outside of the White House. Demonstrators gathered early to picket and recite prayers (Ure). Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who unsuccessful ran for president in the last election, joined the crowd. While speaking to the protestors, Huckabee claimed that he originally decided to pursue politics because he is "pro-life" and believes "if we get this issue wrong, we will inevitably get all the other issues wrong too" (Ure).
